Capt'n Frank's - Kitty Hawk, Outer Banks Restaurant
|
Capt'n Frank's is an institution on the Outer Banks, serving three sizes of all-beef Oscar Mayer hot dogs with a variety of accompaniments.
First of all, decide among the regular dog, a quarter-pounder, or a foot-long. Then, choose from at least a half-dozen specialty creations. The Chicago Dog tops the popularity list, with chili, mustard, onions, and slaw. Runner-up is the eight-item Junkyard Dog, topped with chili, cheese, sauerkraut, onions, mustard, ketchup, slaw, and relish.
We're partial to the Mad Dog, served with chili and hot peppers. If "going to the dogs" doesn't appeal to you, Capt'n Frank's also offers barbecue sandwiches and addictive nacho fries-french fries with chili, cheese, hot peppers, and sour cream. Steamed shrimp is served nightly in season.
Wash down the tasty morsels with a cold beer. Capt'n Frank's serves lunch and dinner daily Memorial Day through Labor Day. Off-season, the restaurant is open every day for lunch except Sunday.

still doing it 7/2/2010

I have been going to Capt'n Franks for 30 years, and even though the place has changed in that time, the great hot dogs have not. It is a must for anyone who wants great food in a fun place.

Owner's son's shrimp is to die for... 5/30/2010
Reviewer: Cate from Ohio

So...you love spiced, steamed shrimp? Tried it at all the fancy "seafood places" on the Beach? or made it yourself? NONE will be finer than the shrimp made here. I dont know his secret - but seriously, get another side of butter and side of Bay Spice and get dirty. It will be in your dreams for years to come! WE LOVE YOU, CAP'N FRANKS!

Our family has been coming to OBX for 15 years, and Capt'n Frank's is the one stop we HAVE to make every year, usually more than once. There's nothing else like it.

An Outer Banks Institution! 6/7/2009
Reviewer: Sam from Little Egg Harbor, NJ
|
So I've been coming to the Outer Banks for, eh, about 30 years now, from the time I was born and raised in Virginia. Cap'n Franks is a mandatory stop for every visit for a hot dog and crinkle-cut fries. It's an Outer Banks institution, plain and simple. The food may not be Zagat-rated, and I've had better hot dogs before, but the service is good, it's and great value, and it's always fun to look at the pictures of the walls. If you've never been there before, it's definitely worth a visit.

tom your an idiot, the capt'n franks chicago dog is the best, "detroit dog" give me a break, they chose the names basically to give a shout out to people from all different cities that visit the obx, the guy on the grill who cooks his butt off and still has time to talk to the customers told me that you always get some guy who thinks they are and expert on hotdogs and wants to challenge the name of every dog, he just laughed it off saying if you cant have fun at a hotdog restaurant on the beach you can't have fun anywhere. Captn Franks keep doing what your doing, i hope you are there for another 35 years

Just Ok 9/12/2008

I love a good hot dog and Capt'n Frank's rates as just ok; nothing special. The Chicago Dog is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING like a real Chicago Hot Dog! If you dropped the slaw, this would be close to a Detroit Coney.

GREAT FOOD! SULLEN, SNOTTY SERVICE! 5/7/2008
Reviewer: First (and last) visit from Maryland

My first (and last) visit to this place was yesterday. When I walked in the door I glanced at the employees behind the counter and smiled. They didn't smile back. In fact, they stared at me like I was there to ROB the place.
I crossed my fingers and placed my order. As I stood waiting for my food to be prepared, I noticed the guy ringing on the register whisper to his skinny co-worker:
"Why are so many fat people coming in"?
Could it be because Capt'n Frank's sells FATTENING FOOD? Oscar mayer's REGULAR hot dogs have SEVENTEEN grams of fat.
Perhaps this guy is sullen and resentful that he has to flip hot dogs for a living instead of waiting for that dream job he's been waiting for Steven Spielberg to call him about.
In any case the owner should hire people who know how to welcome people to his establishment instead using workers who are so rude that they would talk behind their customers backs RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM.
'Never trust a skinny cook'

Fantastic hotdogs (chili, slaw, corndogs, you name it they have it). The place is often quite busy, but service is always quick. I only wish they used real cheese on their coney cheese fries rather than the liquid cheese goo.

Capt'n Franks is a tradition for my family! Every year we stop there at least once for their delicious dogs & shrimp. My favorite is their kraut dog and their OBX style steamed shrimp. It is a wonderful little place that everyone needs to try. I promise you'll love it!

Our family typically goes here once at the beginning of the trip and again before leaving because we know we will crave it until we have it. The best hot dog stand in America, hands down and the prices can't be beat. I crave this literally all year round...

Reviewer: Chrissy from Maryland

My family and I have been coming to the Outer Banks for over sixteen years, and let me tell you Capt'n Franks is the best. The staff is soo nice, and the place is very clean. it doesnt look like much from the outside but it is well worth it. I look forward every year to a nice cold beer, a junk yard dog and nacho fries. YUM! If you want a great place to get a quick bite to eat after you come off the beach, this is the place.
