Better than Taco Bell 7/10/2007 Reviewer: Jen N from Douglassville, PA
If you are looking for authenic Mexican this is a good place to go. It is better than Taco Bell, but not the best authenic Mexican restuarant I have been to. El Rodeo up our way beats this place hands down. I would recommend the Fish Tacos.
We love this place!!! 3/31/2007 Reviewer: Art Vandelay from famous architect USA
We stop at the coastal cactus every vacation. The food is excellent. Esp the salsa.

We ate there last night & it was good. I had the Coastal Cactus Sampler & the best thing on it was the chicken burrito. I'm not a big fan of burritos but it was so good! It also had 1 taco & 2 cheese enchiladas which were good too; just that the burrito was the best! Hubby & in-laws said their food was good too. All in all, we'll go back. Oh, almost forgot--we got the "toothpicks" appetizer & it was very good!

I am a local of the Outer Banks and my family and I go to the Coastal Cactus once a week. It is under new management and I prefer the food now over the previous management. As for the chips being stale. It is not stale they are very thick chips and it is the type of chip. No it is not your local Tostitos brand. The crab dip, wings and my favorite the chicken nachos are all great appetizers. My husbands favorite dish is the chicken chimichanga. I like the taco pasta salad and the seafood enchiladas. Please stop by and enjoy the great food when you get the opportunity.

This is one of the worst mexican restaurants I've ever been to. The chips were stale the food was not worth the calories and the atmosphere needs some help. We need a good mexican place to open in OBX!

I think it's under new ownership, which might account for some of the bad experiences listed, including mine.
We ate here as we do every visit (not the first review 3 years ago), last fall and it was not nearly as good. The food did not seem as fresh, or professionally prepared. It's hard to explain what I mean, but the food previously tasted a couple of notches above a chain mexican place. But this last time, the food had less flavor and was kinda stale tasting.
I'm giving it 3 stars because it was still ok, and the salsa is still great. Will be back on the OBX in November and give it another try.

We always make sure we eat here on our visits to OBX. The food is great! Love the salsa too. We always buy extra jars of salsa to take home with us.

Anyone who says this is great isn't used to good food. Chips stale, salsa....soured or something. Entrees ok, but nothing I couldn't do. We had to change tables after ordering b/c they needed a bigger spot for some reservation. Wouldn't go back!! EVER.

Coastal Cactus gets an A from me. The food is good (fish tacos!) and it's a great place for families! I love the gift shop and get some cute gifts there.
AWESOME! 2/3/2005 Reviewer: Sarah from PA
I would eat here every day if I could! Plenty of good food and large portions. You won't leave hungry.
Great Food 1/20/2005 Reviewer: Ken from Canton, Ohio
We must stop in at least once during our vacation for some great Mexican food. Prices are very reasonable and the salsa is outstanding!
Tasty! 1/9/2005 Reviewer: Anonymous from Somewhere in Cyberspace
We've enjoyed our dinners here. The kid's menu was a little spicy for them, but the grownups liked it just fine!
Not bad but.. 11/22/2004 Reviewer: Tim from kdh, nc
This is a good place if you're close by or just want something different and non-beachy. I hate places with shops, but I do go here 5-7 times a year when I want something different and not to expensive. I prefer La Fogata for Mexican but this place is almost it's equal.
Great Southwestern 11/18/2003 Reviewer: roc-obx from Kill Devil Hills
Very informal, friendly atmosphere here, and the food is fresh and very tasty. Can't go wrong at this restaurant. Neat little gift shop to browse while waiting for your food if you can tear yourself away from the chips and salsa.
My favorite 11/7/2003 Reviewer: Ace Mclean from Reading, PA
We eat hear twice during our week-long stay. It's one of my favs anywhere.
The food is fresh, there's quite a variety, and the service is also good.
Can't beat the salsa, I've got a few jars left in my cabinet here in PA.
