Disappointed 11/30/2009

I went with my sister the day after Thanksgiving 2009. She is a Dare Co. local and heard this was a great place to eat. We arrived for lunch at 11:30am, only 2 tables were seated. The food smelled terrific. The menu has excellent choices. My sister got a steak wrap which she loved and I also tasted and enjoyed. HOWEVER, our food did not come out at the same time. The folks sitting next to us were delivered my sister's food by mistake. They got their food before us and we ordered way ahead of them. I had to ask one of the servers (not the one who took our order) where our food was....I mentioned she tried to deliver my sister's order to the wrong table and she was completely clueless. So, she brought the steak wrap, but did not bring my spinach salad. I waited and waited and waited. Then asked AGAIN where my salad was. They forgot to make it!!! I was told it was a computer glitch. Finally when I got it, (mind you it was an $11.00 spinach salad so my expectations were BIG) I was soooo disappointed! There was only about half a cup of spinach and a few bad tomato wedges with no flavor, fried onions on top and blue cheese dressing. It was nothing like the menu suggested at all. Plus it was full of water. Like they tried to wilt it or saute it, but then changed their mind. Bummer! The waitress who took our order finally came to check on us. I politely gave my disappointment in detail to her. I will say they took it off the bill and she was polite. She said the girl preparing the salad did not know how to make that salad so she sort of made it up. Good grief! You would think an $11 spinach salad would be prepared by someone who knew what they were doing. Highly unlikely I will ever go back there again.

Asked server to make a plain cheese quesadilla for my son, she rudely said "We don't do that" and wouldn't have it made for him. No checkback on our table after food was delivered. Food was good but portion was small for price.
excellent food, wait staff a tad chilly 10/11/2008

small area, like in a fishbowl, but food is always excellent, big portions, but wait staff needs a bit thawing

I've only been there a few times...but since the Austin Creek Grill closed in Hatteras...this is the best meal I've had on the beach. Fatanstic food and the new decor is quite nice. It's a bit pricey...so this will be more of a special occasion place for me. Love it!

We've tried the red Sky Cafe twice. The service is lousy but the sandwiches were quite good. The decor is college-town slum.
Good food & service, lousy decor, over priced wine list 11/11/2003

We ate at Red Sky about 2 or 3 years ago and I wasn't terribly impressed then. We tried it again In October of 2003. We had one of our best meals ever in OBX. I had a fire roasted cobia with lump crab medditeranian veggies and asiago grits. It was outstandind. My wife had the blackened wahoo with avacado salsa. That was also very good. They also had a veggie crab chowder that night. It was loaded with lump crab. It was delicious. However they can improve on the atmosphere and the decor and the wine list should be adjusted a bit.
Maybe it was a bad/off night...... 11/10/2003

.....but our experience in September 2003 at the Red Sky was not good. We had heard so many good things about the Red Sky that we decided to give it a try. We were sitted at the front window at the north end of the room. The tile wall caught my eye and I looked at it. I wish I hadn't. It was filthy....looked as if it had not been cleaned in months. The picture window (the inside) was likewise filthy. Ok, let it pass, as long as the food is good don't worry about the housekeeping. My wife ordered the grouper and I the medallions of veal, along with some appetizers. Well the appetizers were non-descript, so non-descript I forget what they were. OK, no problem....the entrees will be out soon. Well, they came. My wife first noticied a strong fish smell....not a good sign. Her grouper was less than acceptable. So let me tell you about my medallions of veal. First, I had three "medallions"...not bad right? Well yes bad....each medallions was about the size of a quarter! This for =/-$22.00! Ok, small but let me try one. Well, when was the last time you needed a knife to cut your veal? I needed one that night....it was so tough and rubbery I had my doubts that it was veal. Anyway, bottom line is that everything we had was less than acceptable. When I got the check I mentioned our displeasure to our wait person and she said she would tell the chef. She came back and took my money, made no mention of telling the chef. I would have thought that maybe something would have been said, but it wasn't and I didn't pursue any further discussion. So in summary we had a very bad dining experience at the Red Sky. Maybe it was an off-night, I dunno. But if it wasn't and this is what folks think is good dining then I will ever be back.
