We've been eating at the Rundown Cafe for 3 years and it saddens us whenever they close for a few months in the Winter. The owner Michael and the staff (Mandy and CL)are always happy to see us ... as we are to see them. During offseason, their "Downhome Mondays" for the locals serve the best fried chicken, collards and cornbread I've ever had. I recommend this place to everyone! I pray that they don't get flood again like they did in Nov. '09 by Hurrican Nor-Ida (see Beverly Bruck's photos). I wish them many more years of success!

The namesake Rundown soup (or stew) is absolutely wonderful! I have been trying to find the recipe for years to make at home, but can't. I only get it when I visit the OBX.

My favorite is the Coconut Chicken Salad with Journey's End Dressing. I don't understand why they include tomatoes, which don't quite fit in, but expect really good romaine lettuce with snow peas and crispy noodles, among other seasonal variations. There is a koi pond out front. When you go in, ask if there is room to sit on the porch upstairs. It's worth it!
eat every time im at OBX 5/18/2010

Had lunch with a group on a sat afternoon; service was exceptional, food was interesting and good. While the place doesn;t ring the superb bell - only a couple do - it is definitely not to be missed.

We've been eating at Rundown for YEARS. We went back this past August after a two year absence. The owner recognized us and talked with us for awhile to find out what we've been up to. After two years!!! Now that's a memory for a guy who probably sees thousands and thousands of people a year.

I have heard rave reviews from locals about The Rundown Cafe so was excited to try this place for the first time during our trip (8/01/07) We arrived around 5pm and the parking lot was empty. It must have been a good time to arrive because there was no wait. We were promptly seated at a table. We ordered the nacho's and should have requested it w/o the black beans because it was covered in beans....to many beans imo. Husband and daughter ordered the Chicken Jett Fett which was so delicious and an enormous portion. Neither one could finish their meals. I ordered the coconut shrimp which was pretty good. I was not overly impressed with this place...not quite sure what all the hype is about however the food was not bad.

Just got back from OBX. We have been eating at the Rundown for probably 5 years. We have never had a bad meal. During offseason the have "Downhome Mondays" for the locals and serve the best fried chicken, collards and cornbread I have ever had and I'm a southerner and know fried chicken. The owner and waitstaff are the best. They make you feel like family.

My family and I always enjoy going to the Rundown. It's a fun, casual place that has good food with a Jamaican taste. Will be there in the summer!
Fried Chicken Night 3/23/2005

They have fried chicken night in the off season on Monday's. I was very impressed and will go back here more often. I am not a big fan of their lunch specials, but I did like the collards which I have never had in my life. I would give it 4 stars but I am not happy with the lunch sandwiches I have had there. This is a local hangout and worth a try if you're in the Kitty Hawk area (mp2).
