Beach Nourishment 2018 - Nags Head

Just when you think it is not going to happen this year we just got this.

Tim

Beach Nourishment Update
Thank you for your help in getting the word out about our possible beach nourishment project this summer.
Our goal is still to nourish in 2018; however, there are a lot of pieces that must come together before we know if we have a 2018 project or not.
We hope to receive permits for the project in mid-March and, at this time, expect our Board of Commissioners to vote on whether or not to move forward with the project in 2018 or 2019 at their May 2, 2018 meeting.
With this latest schedule in mind, should we move forward with nourishment this summer, construction would start in late June or early July 2018.
Just a few notes to keep in mind:
• Construction won't necessarily start at one particular end of the project. It could start anywhere in the 10 mile project area (from 2919 S. Virginia Dare Trail - the Bonnett Street public beach access - south to our town line with Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
• There is a good chance we will have more than one pump out area (construction area or closed beach area) at a time during the project as we'll likely have more than one dredge working the project.
• As you probably remember from the nourishment projects that took place this past summer, the schedule will likely change and it will change often. Unfortunately, that isn't helpful to our visitors, but scheduling can be impacted by many different issues including weather and dredge fueling.
Thank you again for your patience as we move forward. As always, you are welcome to contact me with any questions. - Roberta Thuman, Public Information Officer, Roberta.Thuman@nagsheadnc.gov or 252.441.5508.

Just in case...

Thanks for the info Tim. I thought for sure beach nourishment was not gonna happen until next year. We just have to wait and see what will happen.

If you cross the bridge early enough, you can avoid beach nourishment all together. Banana

Thanks for posting.

Thanks Tim.

Didn't some of this area in Nags Head have nourishment in the last 5 years? I seem to remember the dune line changes and stairs/walkways getting buried the season after. Interesting it's planned again so soon. Or am I wrong about that?

Most, not all, of Nags Head was nourished in 2011 and they said they would come back to touch up some areas in the future. If I was to make a bet I would bet they can't do it this summer, but who knows and the answer to that now is NO ONE DOES. Maybe ocracokfan can predict the odds.

Although I know some find it less than ideal and who am I to judge that....I kinda enjoyed it myself! We went looking for them and sat and watched for quite a while last year. It was fascinating watching the whole process. Ah well who knows....

But thanks Tim for letting everyone know!
