More Sea turtles

More Sea turtles

I got a call yesterday that someone was needed to pickup a sea turtle at The Hatteras NPS office in Buxton. It was a beautiful day 54° so I volunteered. When I got there around 1pm that had 4 turtles that had been brought in that were on the beach or floating near it. These came in at the point and near Frisco pier so they came from the ocean rather than the sound. One was pretty lively and I had to stop 2 times on the trip back to put it back in the kiddie wadding pool in the back of my SUV. The aquarium STAR center must have 40+ turtles there and 25+ are going to be released Saturday in the gulf Stream. One was brought in by a man and wife who were fishing the point and found the little green turtle and they said they could not figure out who to call about it.

252-441-8622 is the NEST hotline in case anyone ever needs the number to call.

RE: More Sea turtles

Thank you for helping out the turtles, and for the good information!

Here's the link to the aquarium's Amazon page, as well. You can click on the Turtle needs or wish list and buy things the aquarium needs, and have it shipped directly to them. I used this last month to buy a heater for the turtle tanks, but they are still in need of a lot of things. It's a really handy site for those who don't live there and want to help out.

RE: More Sea turtles

I’m curious.
I was of the mind that sea turtles found on Hatteras Island were to be reported to an NPS field biologist, (or some such title ). Is that no longer the protocol? Should they just be reported to NEST now?

Cape Hatteras Area NPS has established a cooperative relationship withe STAR center. Those on island can contact the NPS Stranding hotline at 252-216-6892. A handy number most have stored in phone for HI/NPS support.

Either works. The nps gives them to NEST so either way they get taken care of. I met with 2 nps officers yesterday to get 3 of the 4.

Current cold stunners are from the OCEAN not the sound. off shore the water is warm, near shore it's not. so turtles who wonder out of the gulf stream become stunned and a few have washed up.

The dogs found a dead one washed up in the grass just south of where the dock was rebuilt ( you can see where they cut the cora trees to get out to it) Last week.
I got close enough to see it was well past helping. Not sure if it just washed up from tides. That area seems to get more than its fair share there so thought she might want to take a look.
