Pirates Cove in Manteo

Hi,
Has anyone stayed in Pirates Cove? If so, can you share feedback on your experience? Did you enjoy staying in a gated community? Did you enjoy the amenities - pool, tennis, fitness? Did you enjoy the on-site restuarants, tiki bar? And lastly, did you like being close to a marina and for the watersports like stand-up paddle-boarding, kayaking, etc. I figure being on the sound, you might have a different obx vacation than when you are oceanside which is more a beach vacation.

Just my two cents but I don't think there is any on site rentals or providers of Kayaks or Suo or Jet Skis or Parasailing. You have to come out and go up the "Causeway" a bit to get these activities. Now if you bring your own you can launch easily under the Pirates Cove Bridge. Admittedly, I have never stayed there but a longtime resident of the Outer Banks and a Charterboat Captain I know the place real well and have friends who live there. The Restaurant is GREAT, but higher end. They own the Blue Moon Beach Grill in Nags Head which is also GREAT. The Tiki Bar has afternoon entertainment and you can see tthe Charterboats pull in. Okay I really don't understand coming to the Outer Banks and not "Beaching It". The Outer Banks is a Beach Vacation Location. Pirates Cove can not be considered a Resort, nor is the Outer Banks a true "Resort". I can think of a lot better Locations if you are just looking for a Waterside Resort.

Is it actually “A Gated Community” now? Seems like you have an awful lot of marina traffic coming & going, unless something has changed & they have a guard at the entry?

You don't go past the guard to go to the restaurant or the marina, only to the residential areas.

If you rent one of the condos in Sailfish Villas you might be a bit "too" close to the boats. Pickle can tell you better, but they start those big diesel engines a good bit before they leave to go fishing at O'Dark Early and you might not like hearing that. But the views there are pretty interesting.

RE: Pirates Cove in Manteo

Again this is hearsay, but I had someone tell me once that the noise from the bridge was pretty bad in parts of Pirate's Cove. Maybe unless you have a boat and can rent a place with a slip, it may be more fun to just hang out at the tiki bar one afternoon.

I have played music there before in the evenings, and yes it is pretty cool to watch those big boats come in!

RE: Pirates Cove in Manteo

The resteraunt and tiki bar are great. Watching the charters come in and out and walking the docks is awesome. If you have a boat and want to keep it in the water there is probably no better place. I see lots of people there during the rental season so i assume they have a very active rental community; but it is not like a resort with on site amenities. You will still need to go outside of the community for things to do during the week. The houses are fantastic and the sunset views are great. When we were looking at houses we saw one of the boats from Wicked Tuna (pinwheel) tied up at the house so if you like that show it's kind of cool to have that connection.

Thank you everyone! This was all very useful feedback. I asked because I was thinking of picking up a place there and wanted to gather the pros and cons of a soundside property in that community or move on to some other soundfront areas of the OBX. Love the beach and never get tired of it but would also like to get into boating, fishing and other water activities that are more conducive soundside.

The noise from the boats leaving the marina for early fishing expeditions is a good one! It reminds me of one of the cons someone told me of living on a golf course which is hearing the lawnmowers starting at 4:30 am.

RE: Pirates Cove in Manteo

Okay I would have to take the noise of the Charterboats with a "grain of salt". The engines are started for most boats around 4:30 or 5 AM but they idle to "warm up". They are not revved up like a Motorcycle. In addition the Marina is a No Wake Zone so the boats only putt out. It's not like 60 MPH Tractor Trailer or Cement Trucks going by. Then most of the rentals are through the "Gate" and at least two to three rows of buildings between them and the boats. Yes, Sailfish Drive (first right before Gate House) which borders the North side of the Marina does have some rentals and is along side the boats. That should not be your show stopper.

We have been staying at pirates cove for the last six years and we love it there. We stay at village landings #110. It is a very cozy clean home. All of the homes and the grounds are very well maintained. The whole development is very quiet. If you want to go the beach jennettes pier is short drive over the causeway.
