RE: Dunes breached at Pea Island Visitor Center

Yes... nor'easters do a lot more damage than most people may realize.

RE: Dunes breached at Pea Island Visitor Center

Thanks for the link to that fellow's videos. Very sobering.

Can't help but wonder why those two cars were in the parking lot at the visitor's center on Pea Island. I guess they must have broken down and gotten stuck... Bad luck, that's for sure.

Certainly hope everyone down there where they've really been hit with the high tides and wind driven water is AOK.

RE: Dunes breached at Pea Island Visitor Center

Replenishing the salt marsh. Since the dunes were constructed some 85-90 years ago, this doesn’t happen very often. As you know, there are those that prefer the dunes be removed. (USFWS not repairing their dune line after Isabel breached it in 2003, later causing the new Inlet, LEGO bridge and now a permanent bridge.) Oh, and lest I mention SELC and the “Long bridge”option leaving Pea Island to the ocean’s whims.

RE: Dunes breached at Pea Island Visitor Center

my son and I came through there around 7:30 last night... we'll watch the winds, the tides and NC DOT and plan our exit accordingly

I have parked here and fished in front of the shipwreck for 20 years+.

RE: Dunes breached at Pea Island Visitor Center

Not surprising that the water broke through at the exact spot that folks walk over the dune, wearing it down, year after year.
I am sure USF&WS will be all over it immediately to get it shored up Sad smiley complete with a request for funding to "protect" the impoundments and visitor center they have mismanaged for years.
Just in time for the road to be closed forever (except to "authorized visitor trams") once the jug handle bridge is built to Rodanthe.
Not sorry to be cynical, even Obviousman could see this coming.

RE: Dunes breached at Pea Island Visitor Center

FYI, from the OBX Voice photos of what things look like from the air down on the Pea Island area https://outerbanksvoice.com/2018/03/05/photos-n-c-12-to-remain-closed-on-pea-island-into-tuesday/ Things look pretty bad to me. I feel for all down there.

The local surfers call that "Boilers".

RE: Dunes breached at Pea Island Visitor Center

That is what loaders, graders, and excavators area for.....

Looks very much like after Sandy along that stretch of road; there were 2 big blowouts of the dunes, across NC 12 and into the lagoons; those blowouts still extend into the lagoons.

And it may have been during Isabel or earlier, when that stretch of NC12 was all messed up; even some pavement was washed away then. So nothing particularly new here.

RE: Dunes breached at Pea Island Visitor Center

Holy cow! We've been coming to the Outer Banks for over 30 years. Cannot remember a breach at the area. Hope the new storm coming up the coast doesn't add to the misery.

Moonrise

Named after the Orential shipwreck that went down May 25 in 1862. The boiler of the ship is what is visible and that’s why it’s called “The Boiler”
