NC 12 - North or South?

This might seem a stupid question, but my wife was asking me whether Nags Head is considered on Route 12 North or South. I stared blankly at her and said I didn't know. I said I assume it depends whether the dividing line is at the WMB or at the northern tip of HI. So which is it?

RE: NC 12 - North or South?

I think of the Bonner Bridge over Oregon Inlet as the dividing line... the general atmosphere changes from Nags Head and points north vs. to the south. But then there is the 4-wheel drive area to the far north....

RE: NC 12 - North or South?

If you go by mile markers then it is south. Mile marker one is by the wright mem. Bridge

RE: NC 12 - North or South?

^^ Aren't those mile markers for Rte US158?

RE: NC 12 - North or South?

I always thought of the Outer Banks as 4, maybe 5.....1) "North Four Wheel" from end of NC 12 pavement to VA/NC line; 2) "NC 12 North" from the WMB northward to end of pavement; 3) "NC 12 Central" from the WMB to the Bonner; and 4) "NC 12 South" from the Bonner southward. And maybe 5) take Ocracoke Island out of "NC 12 South" and make it "NC 12 Orcacoke".

RE: NC 12 - North or South?

Oh I've been waiting for a chance to say this! North and South refer to the direction of travel on state roads, and not to the road's location north or south of a certain landmark like they would for a local road. So if you are talking about Route 12, there is no particular area of road called South Route 12, but if you are in Duck heading toward Kitty Hawk, you could say you are on Route 12 South, or southbound, if that makes more sense.

But the local road known as Virginia Dare Trail does have north and south sections. The dividing line is Colington Road in KDH. So Nags Head addresses on the beach road are all South Virginia Dare Trail. Same with Croatan Hwy. The street numbers go down as you head south through Kitty Hawk, while they go up as you head south through Nags Head. This was useful knowledge to me when I used to deliver pizza!

Yep- I've often wondered when I've seen people with North NC-12 and South NC-12 bumper stickers whether they were fans of going to Hatteras and leaving Corolla or vice versa. For proof, attached is a photo from Ocracoke...

Yep, totally agree

RE: NC 12 - North or South?

As the mile markers go, 158 has them but rt 12 is the beach road so those are the ones that are counted all the way down.
The addresses are an indicator also, coming down onto the island, the first two numbers of an address indicate how many miles you are from whalebone junction.
I'm at mile marker 61, so 61 miles from the visitor center, that's where 12 starts, and I'm also at 46854 hwy 12 so I'm 46 miles from whalebone.

Corakers Dad
That makes sense. So are there mile markers that increase going north from the KH Visitor's Center? (I rarely get up that way....)
