You can't keep them in Maryland. I don't even take them out of the water to get the hook out when releasing them. They're one of the best fighting fish out there. They'll make a few jumps, tail walk and fight like a tuna.

We never keep any of them either.
Some ppl enjoy the flavor/taste of them and/or their roe.
I ate it once, years ago, before I was married, prepared by my then MIL to be. That was enuf.
And there’s that old joke about cooking it on a plank and then eating the plank.

They travel in large schools and will bite twister tails on almost every cast. Lots of fun and fast action on a light rod. The fish itself is very bony and like Judy said, better to eat the plank.

A lot of the old skool Outer Banks restaurants used to serve Shad Roe scrambled eggs and I tried it once. Maybe it is one of those things you acquire a taste for? I'd be interested to know who all still serves it there on the beach. Fish

I’m not sure, but I don’t think they can be caught from the ocean...check DMF. Not sure what the regs may be from freshwater, but that is where they spawn.

I like shad, but they are a lot of work to eat unless you're really good at filleting. Used to catch them on the Cape Fear river.

social events in Va are planned around shad planking.
The ruritans have a event in Wakefield to kick off the season. The 3rd weekend in April https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shad_Planking
They are not too bad smoked, you are literally just leaving the fish on the plank and pulling the meat off with a fork then toss the plank and carcass into the fire.
They are fun to catch since they hit on anything.

So much disrespect for the lowly shad..lol I think they are great slow roasted whole in the oven for about 4 hours at 225 degrees and their roe sauteed in butter is also a treat. As I recall , after 4 hours in the oven all the pin bones are so soft you don even notice them.

^ I didn’t disrespect them. I said some people like them. I’m just not one of those people.
