Cost of Alcohol PA vs NC

Good Sunday Morning to Everyone,

Hubby and I are headed down to Nags Head next Sunday (Yay!). To those who travel from PA to Nags Head, I have a question regarding purchasing alcohol. Is it cheaper to purchase beer, wine, and hard liquor down at the ABC stores/ a Brew Thru, than our state stores here in PA?

Thank you!

Tracy

Beer and wine is not sold in the ABC stores. It is available at many places and often discounted there. You can easily price alcohol sold at the ABC stores online since there is no discounting from one ABC store to the next. They do often have sales but they are posted online too.

Thank you, Tim. Sorry, yes, I know the OBX grocery stores will sell the beer and wine. Thank you for providing the link. I really appreciate it!

Best,
Tracy

Coming from NEPA, we were shocked that the price of a 24 pack of Miller Lite cans was 14.98 at Walmart compared to $20 up in PA. We also bought a 12 pack of Beers of Mexico pack (Tecate, Sol, Dos Eqis) bottles for $13 which would've cost us upwards of $20 back home. I'm not sure about the liquor prices as we brought our own with us because we weren't sure about prices.

Just a heads up if you go to Walmarts website and make your store the kitty hawk location, you can search your beer and it will tell you if they have it and the price.

If you travel through Maryland stop there for your "Hard Liquor" it's a lot less money than NC.

For the 30 plus years I've been coming down its always been cheaper. And up until Giant and Wegmans started selling NC - OBX had a much larger selection. I love going into Harris Teeter and building my own 6-pack

Total Wine in Claymont DE has great prices and are open on Sunday. NC prices are very competitive and cheaper than PA but not TW in DE.

DITTO on Maryland being cheaper. We will bring back a case of hard stuff if we go to MD, it is much cheaper if you pick the right place. Those near the state line seem to be very competitive with the prices and they often offer a case discount.

RE: Cost of Alcohol PA vs NC

I usually bring my liquor from home and buy beer and wine when I get there. Looking down that price list that was posted, liquor is WAY more expensive in NC than it is in MD. Example, Absolut, Tito's or Stoli vodka, 1.75L is $39.95 on the list. I pick that up at home for $24-26. I don't know what NC's tax is, but MD adds an additional 3% onto the 6% sales tax on beer, wine or liquour.

RE: Cost of Alcohol PA vs NC

State run Liquor stores have no competition and as a result you get high prices and poor service !! I have lived in Maryland for almost 40 years and would never buy In NC. Beer and wine prices in NC are reasonable .

I usually hit the state store in Buxton for a bottle or two and Food Lion for beer and prices are about the same as up here. Beer here is cheap as down south as well. MI doesn't monopolize liquor sales but the state does set minimum pricing for retail stores and then tax it. So, that saves them the hassle of operating their own stores but ensures a steady source of revenue. So, a bottle of Tito's vodka is the same price at a grocery store as it is in any party store around here. They all sell at the state minimum.

RE: Cost of Alcohol PA vs NC

Mass market beer and wine is cheaper in NC. Craft beer prices are generally the same or close to same. Liquor is about the same in each state. If you are a bargain shopper the tip of shopping in MD and Total Wine is a good one.
I always leave PA with some stock as I usually go through a quart or more of whiskey on the trip down. It makes the drive smoother.

Izzy beat me to it! NC (or any state) should not be in the retail business of anything! In NY (my home state) they allow private liquor stores which promotes competition. NY still gets their liquor tax, but they don't have the expense of running stores. If I was king for a day, I would be even more free market and allow all alcohol to be sold in grocery and 7-11 type stores, with the states still getting their cut.

Thanks so much for everyone's comments and suggestions. I really appreciate it.

We're considering stopping at Roger Wilcow in NJ to stock up on our vacation libations on our way back from leaving our dog with my son and daughter in law. They will be watching our doggie while we're away. We're not big wine and beer drinkers, but we do enjoy Mike's Hard Lemonade and a variety of cocktails.

Thanks again!

This was a relevant question about 10 years ago, but now you can get everything in NC and the prices are better.

Better bring a bottle for Sunday. ABC stores are closed on Sundays. Beer and wine can be purchased only after noon hour.

Silly law, more of an inconvenience than anything. If I have a sat-sat rental I usually go to the grocery store on Sunday morning. NO-BEER for you!

They actually changed that law last year. You can purchase beer and wine after 10 AM on Sunday. Search for NC brunch bill.

^^ so it’s good for restaurants serving Sunday brunches? How about grocers, etc selling beer and wine? Don’t need to be directed to various links...I’ll believe ya. Thanks for the correction.

From what I read it also includes stores. I hope I'm right. We usually get to Morris Farms around 10ish and I like to pick up a couple of bottle of wine.

Yep, grocery stores, 7-11s, Brew Thru's, restaurants.... all crank out beer/wine/cocktails starting at 10 AM on Sunday now.

As others replied, it covers groceries stores and any others selling beer and wine or mixed drinks. I think the main reasoning for changing the law was for restaurants serving brunch, hence the name of the bill.

RE: Cost of Alcohol PA vs NC

Beer and wine are comparable.Booze is generally cheaper in NC since PA consumers are forced to buy from the "State Store subject to the imposition of the 18 percent Johnstown Flood Tax. Pure robbery, I buy almost all of my liquor down in Delaware.
