Tropical storm

Tropical storm

It was sunny this morning in Southern Shores but winds are picking up now and there are a lot of white caps. Hopefully it will blow through quickly. Meanwhile there has been several firetrucks and emergency vehicles heading up Ocean Blvd. towards Duck, not sure whats happening.

Winds are around 10-15mph from the SW so that won't whip up the ocean too much as East winds will. Here is the view from my Kitty Hawk deck at 4pm.

RE: Tropical storm

Another looking east. I bet the sound has whitecaps.

RE: Tropical storm

Going more to the north.

RE: Tropical storm

Well the winds are picking up now!! It looks to be passing by us now and these are the strongest winds yet, but still just 20-30 mph which is not much really.

RE: Tropical storm

These are averages at a bunch of different meters at the moment. Seeing peak gusts of around 58 at Stumpy Point and Alligator River. Not too shabby (almost enough to tip an empty tractor trailer, ala Matthew)

RE: Tropical storm

Well, a southern push. Followed by a westerly as it moves off. Hang in there soundsoiders, gonna get some water in the yard.

One may think the New inlet bridge may see water under it for the first time.

RE: Tropical storm

Here in Colington we are feeling some strong wind gusts. Shaking the house a bit. Must be in the 50 mph + range at present.

RE: Tropical storm

Down in Rodanthe we’re having steady wind around 40 mph with gusts closer to 60 mph I think. House is moving and since it’s dark I can’t see what the ocean is doing. Saw a Facebook post that says 12 is impassable but they didn’t say where.

RE: Tropical storm

^^ I just got a text notification from Dare County. Guess I never opted out of that phone thing I signed up for on our vacation. Anyway, advising no travel between Pea Island and Avon due to soundside flooding.

RE: Tropical storm

Odd. I got that too and am pretty sure I opted out after our vacation too.

For some reason this seems to have come from a different number. When I replied back with “stop” they replied from the first number they were using back in August, and from which I had opted out.

RE: Tropical storm

OI meter is reading about 41-64 mph due west. Similar from Avon up through Nags Head . Power out for us but cell towers ok at the moment

Water right at the top of our bulkhead so yeah, that means some sound side flooding going on

RE: Tropical storm

Well I heard of water rescues at Joe & Kay’s trailer park and at Hatteras campground. Almost within a foot of Irene for us soundside dwellers. Caught me by surprise. A last second bow line on boat saved it from floating away. Water level dropping now

RE: Tropical storm

Yep that last second bow line saved my sorry butt,......and moving the vehicles wiith water almost at the running boards was interesting but mission accomplished.

I truly hope there were no injuries. Definitely a surprise

RE: Tropical storm

its 4 am here in virginia. I had voice mail message from South Nags Head neighbor about 1:30 am telling me about soundside flooding as bad as Irene, came up suddenly. our house is past 17.5 mile marker on west side of Old Oregon Inlet road, on Whitecap St. it is up high enough that it didn't flood during Irene. I will call PM in the morning to check on things.
my younger daughter saw lots of facebook photos and video yesterday of flooding from all over central/ western Virginia where her college friends live. Danville, Farmville, Appomattox, Roanoke, Lynchburg. Lots of local flooding low spots in Richmond. hope everyone is ok all over

RE: Tropical storm

I just took a quick walk around the house. We had approx. 10 inches of "clean" water in the lower level, which is enclosed. Thankfully this time the flood water was not that muddy water we had once before that left half an inch of nasty muck behind when the water receded. About 40 S.F. of vinyl siding blew off. Roof looks okay. Lots of debris washed up in yard. This is the first-time we've lost siding since moving here in 2004.

Word of advice, we live in a flood zone, I suggest you do not buy a house with or enclose the lower level if you move into a flood zone.

RE: Tropical storm

Glad to hear/see that it seems as though you all who've posted are AOK and that things didn't get "that bad" - but bad enough. Over here in Manteo there appears to be some minor flooding downtown - not serious at all from what I could see during my early morning dog walk. (I did see a pod of dolphins in really close to the boardwalk over by Marshes Light - which was very cool.)

RE: Tropical storm

P.S. Have to amend my comments - didn't realize that what I saw earlier in the morning didn't give me the full picture of what happened last night when the sound flooded parts of downtown - the bookstore, etc... A friend showed me a picture from FB and sadly the water did get pretty high... By the time I saw everything it had receded to almost nothing.

RE: Tropical storm

Had 2 feet of water in yards soundside in Brigands bay last night. Trash every where from flooding. Floated a few propane tanks.

RE: Tropical storm

Good to hear from you, Alexy.

Just read this update in the OBX Voice: https://outerbanksvoice.com/2018/10/12/winds-from-michael-soundside-flooding-to-peak-overnight/ that gives an overview of things.

RE: Tropical storm

Mom's house in Manteo had 6" of water in the garage. Darrell's, the 7/11, and the Christmas Shop flooded. The causeway road was covered with 10" marsh grass and downtown Manteo was fenced off. This is according to my brother and sister-in-law.

RE: Tropical storm

We had a lot of sound side flooding in corolla. Neighbor’s pier broke free and ended up on top of our walkway. We just had our pier redone and it made it through but most piers weren’t so lucky.

RE: Tropical storm

Lots of cars totaled out from flooding in Hatteras.
