Bypassing the toll on 158. (And Wyatt update)

Hi there. Long time, no post. smiley We have been Coming through Manteo for about 5 years, so I know that the 158 toll has dramatically increased. I remember that there is a way around it, if someone has the lowdown. Yes, I know that I could search for it, but thought maybe someone on here that isn't on Facebook might want a Wyatt update. (You all watched him grow up here. ??) Well, Wyatt is 23 and a Daddy now. Here is Mr. Caspian. He's 4 months old. Thanks everyone and good to visit again

Take the expressway south and get off on Hillcrest parkway west ( exit 8B) go to the light at Wawa ( battlefield Blvd turn right and go till it ends below the toll).
This time of the year the toll is $2.00 for 2 axles. However with gas in NC being higher it is a great place to hop off and fill up at the Wawa before heading into NC.
Cute little guy too.

RE: Bypassing the toll on 158. (And Wyatt update)

Thanks! That's perfect. We are coming May 18 and are flying this time, so coming from the airport. I think they raise it to $6.00 at that point, right?

RE: Bypassing the toll on 158. (And Wyatt update)

It's actually $3 now.... the gas is cheaper, but the Wawa can be sketchy at night. The tolls is $8 during peak weekends.

*Peak Weekend - The period beginning 12:01 a.m. on Saturday through 12:00 midnight Sunday beginning the weekend before Memorial Day weekend to the weekend after Labor Day weekend.

You're flying in and then looking to add 10-15 min of extra driving so you can avoid paying a $3 toll?

If the detour adds more than 3 minutes you are doing something wrong.

MNH - Somebody always has to be a smarta$$ on most posts. Marylander took up challenge on yours. Blow it off & KEEP POSTING! We original members have tons of knowledge about the area to pass on - don’t let the negative Nellies spoil it for those newbies who actually appreciate our advice. I do the toll, simply because after driving out there yearly, for over 30 years, I still get lost south of the James River & at least know, for a while, where I am when on the toll road. LoL. And congrats to Wyatt on the birth of such a darling baby boy!!

Yep, we have been following Wyatt's life for a long time. At one time I thought he would be playing professional baseball. You have a beautiful grandson Mariann!!!

RE: Bypassing the toll on 158. (And Wyatt update)

While I have grown tired of the whole avoid the toll posts, you know what I really despise?

I really despise posts like this, that show just how old I am. I have been married 23 years and going to the OBX for 20, so yeah, that should tell you something!

LOL, Just Kidding, Wyatt is a great young man. Life comes at you fast.

My daughter Tristen is going to be 17 in August and she first set foot on the Banks when she was 4 months old in 2002.

I joined a few years back and this board was not quite as bad as now.. Now you can't post without someone taking a jab at someone else, most posts anyways. Never fails. I still search through old posts from original members for good info. I appreciate the knowledge that was shared in the posts from the original members.
Very cute baby!

RE: Bypassing the toll on 158. (And Wyatt update)

Sometimes its hard to remember all the great and funny posts because there may be a few negative ones. Try not to be upset by them or respond in kind. In this age of social media some people have become numb to what mean words can do.

RE: Bypassing the toll on 158. (And Wyatt update)

I remember Wyatt wearing the Jimmy Z fake mustache. His baby is cute as could be.

I have also always been fascinated by the dodging of the expressway toll. I remember what it was like before the expressway opened and I don’t really begrudge them the toll.

I am also fascinated by the Wawa at that location being sketchy. Stop at a Wawa in S. Philadelphia or Delaware County sometime for sketchy

RE: Bypassing the toll on 158. (And Wyatt update)

Okay Wyatt, cute,
got that. Why would anybody complain about that toll when they come here and spend $5 or 6 for an Ice Cream Cone. Spend thousands on a house rental and want to go around on a one lane road and 3 or 4 traffic lights????????? I've been told it's a protest or the "principle". Okay have it your way.

RE: Bypassing the toll on 158. (And Wyatt update)

Glad to see you've got a spring trip planned. I come down often in all seasons and always choose to exit for Hillcrest Parkway unless it's a school day start or dismiss time at Hickory HS. Hope to see you post a pic of your cutie Grandson with his first toes in the sand.

RE: Bypassing the toll on 158. (And Wyatt update)

mnhenderson I'm jealous that fine looking young man has more hair on his head than I do.

One reason I take the toll road is safety. S. Battlefield Blvd is a narrow 2 lane road with some sections having narrow shoulders and some deep drainage ditches along the road. I seem to remember the speed limit increases to 55 mph in areas. Too fast for my comfort level.

RE: Bypassing the toll on 158. (And Wyatt update)

Mnhenderson, congratulations on becoming a grandma and I hope that Wyatt and his wife enjoy many years together. I too thought baseball could provide a future opportunity, sometimes the future is now. Good fortunes to your family.

RE: Bypassing the toll on 158. (And Wyatt update)

Thanks everyone. I appreciate your kind words from most of you.
I would also like to apologize for having the audacity to be a bargain hunter. We are able to afford our yearly vacation because we work 45-60 hours a week, clip coupons, barter and research the best prices on the things we purchase. I got our airfare for $139 round trip, by being patient and researching. I got my $112 weekly rental car by checking daily before I went to bed and finally catching that gem. I found our rental for $850 split 2 ways with our friends. I make a weekly payment on that until it's paid for. I clip digital Food Lion coupons before we go. I save a little each week in separate envelopes for dining out, groceries, activities and such. I do all of these things so I can go to the place that resets me once a year. The place I love. So, if my trying to save money really bothers you.....to damn bad.
Also, instead of that $5.00 cone,I would absolutely buy a gallon of ice cream for $2.99 and share it with all my friends. Have a pleasant week.

RE: Bypassing the toll on 158. (And Wyatt update)

When you explain it that way...I applaud your ingenuity!

If you are referring to the wawa in Tinicum, I know someone who use to work there and the stories she could tell ya are well, we can't tell them here Theeth smiley Getting back to bypassing the toll, I find myself doing it more cause I make about 10-14 trips a year now. Just depends on what day it is or time of the day. Or if I need to catch a ferry or not Wink smiley
