Old Whalehead Club

Old Whalehead Club

Going through old vacation pics - trying to organize them in some fashion. I came across these photos of the Whalehead Club, before renovations had begun. This was sometime in the late 1980s. I had gone there to shoot some exterior photos, and the caretaker just happened to be on the premises. He took me through a tour of the old place, which, at that time, was on the market for some ridiculously low price. (I begged my husband to buy it - he thought I was crazy.) Anyway, below are some interior shots before she was restored to her former glory.

1920s-era Art Nouveau-style mansion theme was water lilies. Lilies are incorporate into brass work & wood work throughout the house. This is the molding.

Thanks so much for sharing your photos! We too discovered the house in about 1986. I was so taken with it that we HAVE to visit every year, I remember how it looked before anything was done. The tubs with the salt water faucet, the cork floors, the gun room, all so neat. This is a true treasure. I even tried to get the Downton Abbey folks interested in doing a TV series about the hunt clubs along the Outer Banks. Of course I've never heard anything back. Ok - stop laughing, I know I'm a little crazy!
