Restaurants That are No Longer

All of the talk of restaurants reminded me of many that used to be there but are no longer. Some of our old favorites:

J. L. Seagull
A Restaurant by George

The little hotdog/sandwich place by the Black Pelican in Kitty Hawk that's now Mo's (I think).

Papagayos Soundside-never been anything like it since Journeys End-bfast ARBG-sheer entertainment factor Avalon Pier-bfast Sea Ranch-bfast MEX-ECONO- though some would argue that the food was an afterthought

My son and nephews use to love the Wharf...:smiley40:

I remember A Restaurant By George..lots of fun

I'm going to list some going back to my childhood days that

I'll be interested to see if anyone on here remembers them:

El Gays
Jockey Ridge
Point Harbor

I miss Chardo's - where JK's is now. I miss Midgette's where Mulligans is now. I don't miss Windmill Pt or Keepers Galley or Ludiviche's.

The original Down Under next to the Rodanthe Pier ~ great Happy Hour and some really cute Australian surfers who waited tables at night.

Is The Wharf the one that was on the Bypass - around McDonalds? If so - that was a good one - great sandwiches and beer.

I'm thinking of what is now Mama Kwan's Grill and Tiki Bar. What was the name of that place before?

Mah Midgette's box lunch in KDH over by the Sherwin-Williams. :smiley16:

The Fish Market - that's right, Hoi Toide, thanks! Great clam chowder, soft shell sandwiches and beer too.

J. Flemming Munday's - where Kelly's is now
Mrs. T's Deli - where Staples is now

What was the menu like at J. Flemming Munde's? It was more of a watering hole for us.

Glad to see Ma Midgett's place mentioned, but nobody has listed Quagmire/Papagayo's! Hoi Toide - when you mention Journey's End are you talking about the place on the Beach Road in Kitty Hawk that has been gone forever? mWell, maybe not forever, cause we got their phone number when they closed shop in 1983-4! Up until the last few years we always got calls during the summer from folks looking for reservations!

Papagayos was my numero uno!! Worked there summer of '83. Journeys End is what would now be Run Down Cafe area if not the actual building. I'm pretty sure they did use the building...in KH at the split to Duck.

Was Papagayo in the old Croatan Hotel? Dark gray wood with turquoise shutters?

Ta da!! The bestest, IMO! Sundays- locals meeting en masse. Sand volleyball, live music on the deck, pitchers of Gold Margarita's...YUM!! I'd work both shifts on Sunday & just be worn out but happy. Afterwards we'd all run out to the beach, strip & jump in to get the smell of corn tortillas off our hair & skin. Roanokies put some beautiful old pics of The Croatan Inn over on the "Vintage" forum.

I'll second Quagmires!! I've posted here many times how much I miss it and how there's nothing now that compares!

Quagmires on the ocean at 7.3, The Wharf Buffet on the Beach road in Nags Head, The Seafood Lunch Counter in the Seamark grocery store in Kitty Hawk (by far the best seafood prices). RV's before it became Sugar Creek. Lances Seafood in Nags Head (on the bypass) Only ate there once but it was good.

I miss Clara's in Manteo - that was a required stop each year.

The Wharf was the last buffet that i'd recommend to anyone. The Seafare was passable until they were gobbled up by Carolina Seafood.

Where are the places that you like to go to now, but are in danger of extinction???

How about Quagmire's? That was a good place that I miss.

Resteraunts

I met my wife at A Restaurant By George - she was a former Seafarer staff. Does anyone recall Gandalfs? Now the home of Tortugas Lie, and aka Quagmires in a previous incarnation. Jan Kanry of Gandalfs just passed away recently.
