Does Anyone Remember the Castaways Hotel in Avon?

I've never stayed there but was always fascinated with it. Any pictures out there? I remember the property being HUGE and it being torn down fairly recently for the Ocean Isle Estates.

Love all the old pictures here of the Outer Banks. Thanks for sharing them! I'm kinda jealous of those of you who have been visiting for a long time. I've only known of the Outer Banks since the mid 90's.

Oh yes...I always thoughtit looked so strange. Totally out of it's environment. I'd say there is a chance that my oldest daughter has a picture of it. When she was in 6th grade she went with a school group on an Outer Banks trip and they stayed there a couple of nights. But those pics are probably buried somewhere in my attic. I tried a google search, but to no avail :(

Hey! look what I found: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTro7QVy4ts

Very cool Renee! Thanks for digging that up. I enjoyed the animals too :smile9:

What a view that place had. Of course it had to be replaced by high end mcmansions. I can't imagine what they got for that property. $$$$$$$$
We've been coming to Avon since about '96, if I remember correctly, that hotel was torn down around 2002. I find it strange that it's so hard to find info on it as big as that place was.

Do you remember the restaurant that was located on the ground floor? I think it was the Blue Parrot which later relocated across the street onto the sound side. I still remember the huge amount of damage the building sustained after a hurricane or northeaster. Most of the stucco facade on the side of the building that faced Hwy. 12 was ripped off. Was that what caused the building to be torn down or the fact that all that land was worth more than the repairs and future business might bring?

YES! I do remember the Blue Parrot. Had dinner there once but never went after it moved.

Hmmm, the restaurant sign at the end of the video was rather interesting, lol!

The hotel was just one street North of where our place is, place was a POS. My how the times have changed, That was really a blast from the past.

I use to look at it but never visited it in person.

Was Castaways the Kona Kai from waaaay back in the day?

yup

Weren't there also small cottages, maybe across the street from them, at one time? I'm talking back in the early-mid '80s?

Hmmm Good

Yes. My family and I stayed there in the early 90s and I remember the horse(was told belonged to the owners daughter) that roamed the property. It would even wander inside the hotel entering through the large rear access of the hotel where the vending machines were located. It was a simple clean, quiet, and quaint hotel with a pretty good restaurant and even an indoor pool. Was a nice place to recharge and take the kids if you weren't prepared to rent a cottage for a week. Was sorry to see it was torn down. It will always be another fond memory of times spent in the Outer Banks.

My husband and I stayed there many years until they tore it down.It had very large rooms,a wet bar, micro, ref. The Blue Parrot was ok food all that great. But it alot beating from hurricanes and it ended up with bad mangers so they sold out to the big mega manions. I sure they made millions. They need more Hotels that are Oceanfronts.

Really miss that place... Been lurking around the message board for a while but when I discovered this post I had to through my two cents in. I remember going by there, Kona Kai, when it was being built. Really weird with the big Polynesian statues out front. Later on my buddies and I started staying there on fishing trips. It was a decent place, being the only multi floor hotel on the island, with private balconies and an on site restaurant. The Blue Parrot had great she crab soup. When my wife and I started dating it was the first place I took her. We would order food to go from the restaurant and take it up to the room and have dinner on our balcony. We went back many times. It started showing it's age in the latter years but we were really sorry to see it torn down to make way for the McMansions that occupy the site now. We sigh every time we go by there.

Funny how the Castawys came up just today. Friends are planning going drum fishing this fall and they started talking about the "big" hotel that we used to use in Avon and I knew right away what they were talking about. Thumbs up

Yes, I recall a hotel there. I'm not sure of the name because I started going to the banks in 1969 and it could have been something else at that time. Thanks for asking. Brings back some great memories.

Always seemed out of place to see a building that big on HI. Stayed at the Koni Kia an extra day after a week rental with the wife and kids. Hoped the surf would clean up after an offshore hurricane. Probably late 80's.Rained all night and surf stayed trashed . Room leaked so bad carpets were soaked when we checked out. One of our treasured memories.

The was where I stayed during my first OBX visit in 1990 or 1991. Had a room on the 2d or 3rd floor facing the water and got to see the moon come up over the ocean.

Hi!

I stayed at The Castaways in 2000 and 2001. If I remember correctly, it was the only oceanfront hotel in the Avon area. It was worn and tired but you couldn't beat the location. I found the old brochure and room rate sheet from 2000. I'll attach the scans.
