It's been awhile since I've steamed crabs, and the steam pot was loaned by a neighbor...one of those extra large pots with a flame element underneath. Is there anywhere near KH or Rodanthe for purchasing something suitable for steaming crabs or give me your best "make do" with what you have ideas.

Ace Hardware..... WalMart......K-mart ..... Just get a regular crab pot steamer that you can use on the stove or grill burner. "Make-Do " won't work with crabs.. you have to have seperate water/crab chambers...or you get boiled crabs.

I did a 'make-do' here at home... took a foil pie pan and put a bunch of holes in it, put it upside-down in the pot and voila, an inexpensive steamer.... make sure the pie pan JUST fits in the pot you use..... it works in a pinch.

Good luck finding one. I searched everywhere here in Va and everyplace from Kitty Hawk through Nagshead. You would think someplace on the Outerbanks would sell them, wouldn't you? I gave up and started looking in thrift shops. The long shot paid off. I found a brand new two chamber pot in the box at a thrift shop for $12! Either buy it on the internet or look at the thrift shops. Some have pasta strainer pots. They are one chamber but if you elevate the strainer you can fake it pretty well. Good luck!

Couple cheap bricks in the bottom of a pot can work in a pinch. Anything to keep the crabs/shrimp/intended victim above the water. Just don't fill it too much.

Well it looks as if I'm going shopping locally. I'm just not about to take a chance on not finding a steam pot on the Banks. Thanks for the reminder about not boiling the crabs. We plan on contacting Gene and I don't want to ruin any of those yummy crabs.

We got ours at Billy's Seafood. A wee bit pricy but same thing about not finding one anywhere else. (Billy also made our 5 crab pots and supplies us with the 50 pound crates of frozen Medhaven for baitin. Pays for itself many times over:smiley1smiley

Try Kelloggs in Nags Head or the kitchen shop at the outlets.
