Another thread about relocating to the Outer Banks

My wife and I have been vacationing in the outer banks for a while and liked it so much we bought a vacation home there. We have been spending as much time as we can there and recently decided to try to retire early and move there in a couple years. We are pretty familiar with the area from a tourist perspective but would like to learn more from a local perspective. I have starting reading a couple local newspapers online but would like suggestions on other sources that may be useful to learn more about local issues such as the bridge controversies, crime, beach replenishment, local politics, fishing etc. Thanks.

RE: Another thread about relocating to the Outer Banks

I will reply by saying that I am someone else who is hoping to do this. That said, I believe you will probably not get as many views down in this forum as you would in the main forum, even though I agree with you that this is right where one would think such discussions would take place.

There are some very helpful members here who are longtime locals, transplants - whether they relocated many years ago, or are more recent residents.

I regularly read online The Island Free Press, The Outer Banks Voice, and the Outer Banks Sentinel. (I keep meaning to subscribe via mail to The Coastland Times out of Manteo.) I also subscribe to Coastal Review Online http://www.coastalreview.org Depending upon whether one has a political "leaning" there are local organizations - such as http://daredemocrats.com and, no doubt, there is a Republican organization.

Depending upon where your house is located, I am sure there are a number of local organizations that are active in all sorts of areas... FaceBook does seem to have some groups - whether they're environmentally oriented or otherwise. I recall that there is a fishing forum - perhaps PM Alexy, if you don't get some feedback right here?

Hopefully, members such as Pickle, Dave S, Tim OBX, Alexy, notinobx... as well as MANY others will respond - otherwise, if you don't get any help, I'd repost in the main forum. Meanwhile, I'll also be waiting to see what suggestions are made. Wink smiley

obxmini, thanks for the reply and advice. I've seen a couple of the papers you mentioned and will check out the others. I'm not really interested in political parties but like to keep up with how the local government is being run.

RE: Another thread about relocating to the Outer Banks

You're more than welcome. I do hope some others with more helpful information will respond over the next few days.

Ditto on re-posting to the main forum, unless you want to get into local politics. Also your location in general will help. From Carova to Ocracoke, three counties to cover.

Prior to my first summer season, spanning May-October 1983 I got a subscription to The Coastland Times. It isn't online & yes, there's other options online as mentioned, but again some are aimed at the Northern or Southern beaches. smiley with shades

RE: Another thread about relocating to the Outer Banks

Just want to second the Island Free Press. Excellent source of local knowledge.

RE: Another thread about relocating to the Outer Banks

If you are on Hatteras, then Island Free Press for sure; it is focused on that area. It also has more of a 'tell it like it is' attitude IMHO.

If you are looking into the bridge issues, avoid the Norfolk and Raleigh papers; they are very slanted in what the present and how they present it. If you are talking about the Bonner Bridge, then I may be able to point you to some info; I kept up with that one pretty closely.

The Dare County website has some info that is worthwhile perusing, just to see all the things they do.

50% hate new bridges, 50% love/want them... any will get delayed with lawsuits. Crime is higher than you may think, concentrated to some areas but still lock your car doors. Beach replenishment hasn't happened on this scale before, but most think it's worthwhile use tax funds. And... fishing's good 9 months out of the year. Hope this helps!
