Hello Everyone! We didn't make it down last year, so I'm feeling a little out of the loop. I usually "love" the planning phase of our OBX vacations, but I just don't have as much time to dedicate to it as I would like this year. Sad smiley We have a couple major events going on with our daughters between now and then. One is graduating from high school and the other is turning 16, so all of my free time is spent planning and preparing for these parties, etc., etc... The actual events are June 3 and June 4, and then we leave for the OBX on June 9! (Then while we're there, I have a rather big birthday that starts with a 5 and ends with a 0!) So, if any of you could give us suggestions on your favorite restaurants in Avon, Ocracoke, Nags Head, and maybe even on Roanoke, that would be quite helpful to me. (Getting on this board for a few moments in the morning, has been my "guilty pleasure" lately!) Thanks for your help!

Two good casual places in Avon, Bro's Sandwhich Shack, near the Food Lion, and Oceana's Bistro.

Our family always tried to do one "let's get dressed up for a fancy dinner at Owens" evening when both girls lived at home and we always vacationed together. It's pricy but so worth it! Owens is on beach road in nags head around mile post 16 or 15.5. A casual favorite that we go to for the view and atmosphere and beer selection and the peel and eat shrimp special (every day from 4 to 6 pm) is Fish Heads on the Outer Banks Pier, mile post 18.5 on Old Oregon Inlet Road. Check their face book page, they have live music on weekends now, most every day during summer. On the causeway to Manteo is Basnights Lone Cedar Cafe that has Sunday brunch starting 11 am, that's always a treat.
Happy birthday in advance! Hope it's great!

Hey - We'll be down in Waves that same week! Leaving Indy on the 9th and stopping over on the drive down.

My favorite place on OI is Jolly Roger. The food is good, but the best is to get a table on the porch overlooking the lake. Can't beat that. This will be our first time staying on HI, so I'm not all that familiar with Avon. I do know of our yearly tradition of going to Top Dog Café in Waves. This year, we'll be right across the street from it!

These all sound like great ideas, thanks a lot! We usually just do casual, but a nicer evening would be fun. Also, thanks for the early b-day wishes! I thought that being on the Outer Banks would be the best way (and easiest way) to turn 50.

We'll be coming from Muncie, so it looks like we'll be following each other on the way down. We'll also stop on Friday night somewhere. We'll be staying the week in Salvo. Top Dog has always been one of our favorites, too! Thanks for the ideas!

You mentioned Roanoke. Our favorite is Ortega'z right in downtown historic Manteo http://www.ortegaz.com/index.html - there are a number of tables outside (but shaded in case you're thinking of lunch). I've never had lunch there, however have had dinner a number of times throughout the year and the food is excellent, as well as is their selection of wine. No doubt the beer is also plentiful, too. Honestly, just love the place and the staff is great too. Very friendly, helpful but not intrusive. Thumbs up Fish

Just happened to see it on TV the other night: http://www.foodnetwork.com/restaurants/nc/manteo/ortegaz-southwestern-grill-restaurant

Awesome! My sister and her family will be pulling out of Fairmount on friday. Convoy to the banks!

I second Oceana's Bistro in Avon. They serve all three meals, but get there early for supper, it fills up quick. Enjoy! Beer

On Ocracoke we L-O-V-E Ocracoke Oyster Company!

If Buxton is a possibility: Rusty's Surf and Turf is a favorite and The Inn on Pamlico has really evolved lately into an even higher caliber "fine dining" spot.

In Avon, we also really enjoy Oceanas!

Nags Head recommendation would be Basnight's Lone Cedar! or Miller's! Or Blue Moon! So many options!

I have to agree with KellyBean...the best food we had on Ocracoke was Ocracoke Oyster Company. For us..Second would be The Flying Melon then Diago's. Flying Melon would get my vote for best all around smiley

Ocracoke Bar and Grille fans here. Same people that own the gas station own this one. They know what they're doing and they're nice about it too.

I was a fan of Ocracoke Oyster Company (even as the Topless Oyster) until this past year when the drinks and food were meh and the server wasn't that nice.

Since others have mentioned Buxton, Buxton Munch is a great place for lunch. Of course, Orange Blossom Bakery in Buxton for apple uglies and other breakfast items.

Buxton Munch is a great spot for lunch. It's too bad they don't have dinner hours.

Although the Orange Blossom is known for the Apple Uglie, be sure to pick up a Rum Raisin Cinnamon Bun. They are excellent.

The Sandbar Grille also gets high marks from us.

Finally, We really enjoyed Goodwinds Restaurant in Rodanthe. It is located above Kitty Hawk Kites. The food is four star quality, nice selection of craft beers, with a casual atmosphere. The views are also fantastic.

From what I have been told Munch is a husband & wife team, with some hired waiters. The husband is the cook. If they had longer hours he would need help or he might not function after a few weeks.

It is a shame, because they have that beautiful bar area that doesn't get the use it deserves. I picture happy hour drinks with a a guitar player strumming some Buffett tune,s while I enjoy an ice cold beverage munching a dinner crabby patty.

True on the view but the place changed hands last year and the food is ok just not as good as it use to be.. O bar is good great prices on everything ..
Sorellas / Ocracoke Pizza is great. if your into Pasta they have some excellent pasta dishes, Ocracoke Oyster is good too. THey have a nice NC BBQ if you're into that.
If you want wings Gaffers has a nice selection of them and cheep .50 during happy hour.not just hot wings but a number of other flavors too. Lets not forget Eduardo's. THe shrimp burrito and crab tacos are great. They also make a breakfast burrito is good too.

I also recommend the "Mad Crabber", 40606 Harbor Rd
in Avon. Pink building on the sound side, at the 1st traffic light. I got my first soft shell crabs of the season there last month, and enjoyed them very much. It's a keeper.

Thanks again to all of you that have responded with suggestions. I'm glad that you've even mentioned ideas in places that I didn't think of. We'll be staying in Salvo, so we will be up and down Hatteras Island, so anything on Hatteras is a possibility. So far, there have been 3 suggestions (I think) for Avon...Bro's Sandwich Shack, Oceana's Bistro, and Mad Crabber. Are there any more thoughts on restaurants in Avon, the ones mentioned or new ones?

Ketch 55 in Avon is my favorite for dinner, and Bro's has great sandwiches
