Interesting take. Makes sense, I never really thought of it this way.

So if I read the article correctly, my choice is more grocery stores or more hotels?

The downside of more grocery stores? (Someone please fill this in as none come to mind).

The downside to hotels? Crowded beaches, more commercialism like the Jersey shore.

I have no problem with a few more grocery stores. (Just no more Wings stores). Sad smiley

I had never been to OBX 5 years ago and finally made the trip after hearing "You've got to go - it's just different than other beaches" repeatedly. My first trip I figured out that "difference". The low concentration of houses, ie., no 20 story high hotels with 400 rooms. The same stretch of beach on OBX had housing for 20-40 people as the stretch of beach with the Jersey hotel on it dumped 200-400 people in the same stretch of beach.

One of the reasons I'm not thrilled with the 25+ room hotels (they're not houses or McMansions, they're hotels!)

.....stepping off soapbox......

Amen to that. We happily drive 6+ hours from the DC area to avoid the experience of traipsing around 5-10 minutes trying to find an unoccupied patch of sand big enough for a couple of towels.

I've always thought that whoever put the height limit on OBX structures was *brilliant*. The low density is what attracts millions of visitors from DC and points north. If it weren't for that, probably most wouldn't make the trip, with OC and Delaware beaches 2-3 hours closer.

The low density is what attracts millions. ??? As Yoga Berra once said. Nobody goes there anymore it's too crowded.

No matter what you do, there are always unintended consequences. Come to Ocracoke! We don't have an over abundance of grocery stores.

Sorry to say, the development I have seen in the past 10 years is not all for the good. In my opinion. We rented a nice house in SS for years. Then they built a yuppie hut next door. Loud inebriated pin heads 24 hours a day.

All the old places going down.

My own concoction. Open to alternatives, though.

I use the term Hipster Doofus Paradise.

Examples are any town/neighborhood that has an overabundance of micro breweries, micro distilleries coffee shops, vape stores, tattoo parlors, over priced apartment complexes, etc.

IE: I grew up in Phoenixville, PA when it was a blue collar steel town, not the hipster doofus paradise it is today.

No argument here on that point. I see a lot of man buns driving through Phoenixville lately. Some throw in a beer brewer's beard for good measure.

Just because people aren't exactly like you expect them to be doesn't justify you calling them derogatory names. Diversity is a beautiful thing as long as you aren't causing harm to others.

... OK....what are "man buns" and "beer brewer's beard" folks?

Man bun is just that. Long hair that is bunched up into a bun on the back of a guys head. Hate them. My wife also hates the look of them.

If you watched the NCAAs, there were a couple of guys that had them. Think one was a UVA guard. Looked pretty stupid.

Never heard beer brewer's beard, but I suspect what it is. Have a bunch of friends in their late 20s/30s now I met through a car web site.

Just did a search ... if it's what google images shows, it's what I thought it was. Think the West Virginia basketball mountaineer's beard.

A mountain man beard story ...

A friend at a car dealership had one. Way too long, we thought. Stopped in again, and it was trimmed. looked good.

Mentioned that he looked so much better to the GM of the dealership, also a friend: "He ran his hand through his beard and pulled out an M&M, thinking, 'can't remember the last time I had M&M's. Really hope my daughter put it in there.' "

Trimmed his beard.

Yes, it was a UVA guard that has a dumbass (my opinion, but also an opinion shared by his mom Theeth smiley ) man bun.
