Saturday traffic 2017

This is starting to look like the new normal - no traffic back ups on the bridge to Kitty Hawk. It's 11am and the bridge is not backed up. Sure, rt 12 is going up to Duck, but not the bridge. Are they coming sooner? Later? Going on the bypass around the bridge?

Heading there next Saturday. Leaving ohio Friday and stopping at colonial williamsburgh for our first visit there. I told everyone we would be on the road at 7am Saturday to beat the " normal" traffic but its sure looking different this year. But, as soon as I let them sleep a bit longer next week will be backed up. I am holding my ground on this one.

RE: Saturday traffic 2017

VDOT has been flooding the airwaves with PSAs about construction on I-64 in Hampton Roads, and the need to consider alternatives. I wouldn't be surprised if enough OBX bound drivers are avoiding the VA Tidewater area altogether and taking I-95 south and entering the outer banks through Manteo. Is traffic up on U.S. 64 I wonder?

RE: Saturday traffic 2017

I am still curious if others hit the 45 plus minute delay at the VA/NC border like we did on Saturday July 1st. I had not planned for that, as I had never experienced troubles in that area. Bridge was mildly backed up at about 11:00 that day.

RE: Saturday traffic 2017

The web cam almost looks like October
unbelievable

RE: Saturday traffic 2017

I am really surprised. 12:30 and not backed up.

RE: Saturday traffic 2017

1 pm . Amazing

RE: Saturday traffic 2017

I had to leave So. Shores today around 11:30am. Went "the back way" and we counted 155 cars from Hickory to KH Elementary School.

RE: Saturday traffic 2017

sooo, unless they are "helicoptering in", does this suggest a down year for vacation rentals?

Why people go that way through Southern Shores is a mystery to me. When they do get to rt 12 and have to turn north towards Duck they find that rt 12 is backed up and there might be 1 or 2 cars that can get out onto rt 12 with each light cycle, so they would be better off just going up rt 12 and not doing the Southern Shore bypass - which takes longer because so many are in front of you doing it too. Sad smiley

The county tourism department has made a lot of effort to get people going to Nags Head, KDH and Hatteras to use a route that goes to Manteo and then over rt 64 to Nags Head where they can go north or south. Maybe they are doing that more. Something has changed - that is for sure!

Right? This was in a 10 minute time frame too. My heart goes out to the homeowners on that route.

We did this last year, and it was one of the worst decisions I've ever made. Seriously like top 5 worst traffic situations of my life. We're not coming from the north, but instead going east on Route 460 then got on I-95 thinking it was only a short amount of time before we could hit Rocky Mount. I don't know why I didn't think about all the other drivers that would be going down I-95 going to other southern beaches. It was truly horrible. I do not suggest anyone do this.

We just arrived in Nags Head from Cleveland area today. Started the trip yesterday and stayed in Fredricksburg Friday night, and left there this morning around 5am. made it to Nags Head just after 830am includinga couple of leisurely stops for coffee and then the fruit stands on Rt 168.

Let us know about Williamsburg...thought about doing that this year but wasnt sure how much we could see in half a day or so.

Good luck!

No, I've been down the last two weekends arriving at the border around 8:15 am, and no backups either Saturday at the border or the bridge. I think you might have caught the aftermath of an incident of some kind.

RE: Saturday traffic 2017

I will be doing what you are doing....going down next Friday night, stay in Virginia Beach and come in the next morning. Colonial Williamsburg is awesome, but when it's hot it can be a little difficult in those non-AC houses. Have fun.

RE: Saturday traffic 2017

Tim and all....I really appreciate the ever changing info and current updates on the Sat. traffic issues. I'll keep reading as our Sat. is Aug 5-earlier posts had me really stressing on the 'best alternative routes' as we originate in Williamsburg on 64. Didn't know if we should do the ferry to Surry, work down to Manteo, etc? Because for us that is a lot of extra miles if this issue is dwindling and getting better fluidity.

RE: Saturday traffic 2017

Definitely looks like it's a down year. Wont matter to us this year I have a class I'm taking on the Saturday we are leaving and unfortunately no way to get out of it. So we wont arrive to the bridge until maybe 2am.

RE: Saturday traffic 2017

Coming to Duck from PA on the 29th. What time does Rt 12 to Duck start backing up? Also, we are considering trying to get to the Bridge around 9 and going to a beach access in KDH so we can hang on the beach for a while then head north to Duck later in the day. Any suggestions or thoughts about that?

RE: Saturday traffic 2017

So we arrive Saturday August 19th.....am I reading correctly that the traffic hasn't been bad on Saturdays so far? I am trying to avoid leaving at 3am from NJ and trying to find something to do until 4 with kids and a dog... Hubby doesn't want to drive 70 miles out of the way to go thru Edenton....

RE: Saturday traffic 2017

Lisa, you are correct about recent conditions. And traffic tends to decrease mid- August.
The construction on interstate 64 between Williamsburg and Newport News WILL shill be going on, and that stretch should be avoided. That said, if you use the waze app that could alert you in advance if there is traffic jam in that area. Sometimes its just slow, but moving. Your choice.

I asked everyone a while back and they all insisted that rentals are up. Personally I can't understand given the traffic but whatever...

RE: Saturday traffic 2017

It took us 10-15 mins to cross bridge on Sat July 8th @ 12:30PM. 90 mins Kitty Hawk to Duck. We spoke with some locals who also agreed that people short cutting thru Southern Shores upsets the flow.

As Tim has said social media is a factor. I would add Google Maps has one going via Dogwood Trail as a way to get to Duck 20 minutes faster. This creates a cross traffic nitemare as people are turning back on at the traffic lites to North 12.

However, this was not the worst part of our trip...forgetting to update my EZ Pass info for my car turned out to be the downer.

RE: Saturday traffic 2017

Not a down year for rentals at all. My thought is better planning by vacationers, plus the cops at the light eliminating the gridlock that really made the backups that much worse.
