Back in the late 1970's early 1980's, i remember

The Foosball Palace - had tons of foosball tables, air hockey, a bar, ect. It was right on the beach - the back doors would open to the sound of the ocean. I think right next to it was a nightclub - of sorts - remember going there a few times...don't recall the name - seems like they were right next to each other. Would love to have a picture if anyone has one.

Atlantis?

Never went there, but in the '80s I remember the Games People Play arcade in the Outer Banks Mall (the old indoor one) and the Soundside Pavilion.

Zero's Subs also had some games I used to play when I went there.

Sounside Pavilion is a name not heard often. We had some fishing tournament parties over there. Fish

It was Atlantis late '70s, but earlier I remember there was a nightclub with a black-light room where they would paint your body with florescent paints al la Laugh-In. Quite scandalous!

"Oz" maybe? I never went but tales have been told. Atlantis was hot, sweaty & filthy. The toilets were forever over flowing, so we'd all grab a beer & sit on the beach while it was being drained. Good Times!! Laughing smiley

That's right it was OZ - I was old enough for Atlantis (18 back in those days) but a scooch too young for OZ - lived it vicariously through older siblings though

I found these pics of Pennys Hill, around the mid 70's. Lots of fun there. The green and white Chevy truck you see the back of, had just snapped the front axle in half by hitting the bottom of the hill too fast to go up, the truck to the right had just dragged him off.

RE: Back in the late 1970's early 1980's, i remember

Some weekends it was steep, some weekends it wasnt.

RE: Back in the late 1970's early 1980's, i remember

Remember this house that was close to Pennys Hill there. Late 80's I think. Shows how the beach can approach. I think it later burnt down.

We used to stay in that house each fall. It had an indoor pool!! The well water was so gross I never could bring myself to bathe, shower or jacuzzi there.

Thanks for sharing those photographs. I remember now.

I grew up over in Currituck, just over the water across from the hill. I could use binoculars to check out what was going on, and see how crowded it was. Some weekends, on the steep side, it must of been a hundred or so vehicles parked all around. All kind of 4x4's, 2wd with balloon tires they were called back then, sand rails and bikes. I had several bikes I carried over back then. It was wide open for a while.
One day this jeep was going up with 2 guys in the back standing up holding onto the roll bar, having a good ol' time. He went up lots of times during the day. It could get a little rough after lots of vehicles go up, back and forth. This one time the Jeep going up kind of fast and hit some bad ruts, one of the guys holding onto the roll bar lost his grip and fell out the back and landed on his head. Some one called for help. The big area right there by the steep side was cleared out, and one of those huge twin rotor Coast Guard helicopters landed right there in front of us, and carried him to the hospital. Never expected to see that there.

I remember watching the 4x4's make a go up and down the hill in the mid 70's ( probably summer 76) seeing what could and could not make it. If toyota had any marketing budget at all they would of filmed the toyota FJ40 land cruisers going up and down the hill with ease and pulling out stuck CJ-5's full size pickups and sand rails and made a fortune.

Its all in the type of tires you have, some need to be aired down and some do not. Around '75 I think, we were down there, my brother in law had a new ford 4x4, with a big engine and big tires. Couldnt make it up half way after countless tries. To look at the truck you would think it would just cruise up the hill. As we watched this old Jeep with real wide tires aired way down go up effortlessly time after time, waving at us while doing this. He finally came over and told us to air down. Made a huge difference going over top without too much trouble. The next year I got what was my first 4x4,a CJ5. I always carried a snatching strap, which I used and loaded out a lot at the beach, fold up shovel and a little compressor.

We used to play on Run Hill at night before the schools started being built back there at KDH. It was like a roller coaster driving down the main entry, where your organs flip up into where they don’t belong.

We were prolly lucky to have never broke an axle there! Flashlight tag...Good Times!

RE: Back in the late 1970's early 1980's, i remember

Yea, I remember back there. Out of high school, (Currituck) I worked with my dad, he was a building contractor. He built all up and down the beach, from Duck to Rodanthe. We did a bunch of houses in Ocean acres, the road across from McDonalds, long before McD's was there, could get to Run Hill that way. My favorite was at the end of Ocean Acres, the pavement ended, and it wound way back towards the sound and came out way down behind Jockeys Ridge. That was a great ride on our dirt bikes.

Yes, we fooled around a lot back in Nags Head Woods. Daytime, nighttime, fun times! We went to that little soundside point where you can pull over & park, to catch the sunset. I straddled a downed tree & sat there for a bit. Big mistake! Chiggers ate me up all along my inner legs. Ugh

If i remember right back there at the sound, there was a cliff back there right at the sounds shore, you could park and climb down to the beach. And up a ways, riding the power line, hills one after another.

Right, it sounds like the same place I got the chiggers. The road takes a jog to the left as you go north to south. Some Seals lived back there.

Are you thinking of “Seven Sisters?” I want to say “Engagement Hill” but am having a brain freeze.

When I was at the outer banks as a kid in the seventies, I always wanted to go to the Foosball Palace, but my parents didn't allow us to go to arcades. Dad wanted us to make our own fun on the beaches (which we did!) and learn new things by going to museums and discovering natural beauty and nature. I did do those things - I can identify lots of the local shells, birds and animals, plants, architcture, and other things along the outer banks. But I still loved playing Air Hockey! Lol
