While vacationing in the OBX this washed up on the beach. Every morning my husband goes for a long walk on the beach and he always picks up trash. He came back and he laid this on the picnic table. Of course my response was...."What is that"? He said "Its a piece of the space shuttle Challenger. Well...needless to say we laughed at him the whole entire trip. And, he laughed with us...but, kept saying...that is what it was. Yea...right. LOL When I got home I hit the internet trying to find out what it was.

A large pice of aircraft fuselage was found this week as well. Could be related. You didn't say when your husband found it.

It is honeycomb core that is used mostly in aircraft but also in boat manufacturing.

Being from an aviation background, I would try to get it to an FAA office. It may be a piece of evidence from a plane wreck. I'm thinking MH370, but you say you found it 4 years ago, 370 was 3 1/2 years ago. The FAA may want that piece.

My brother found a piece of an airplane about five years ago on the south side of the point. It was white and red and about 18" by 30". He worked in DC so he thought he could give to the proper authority to try to figure where it came from.
He called both the faa and the NTSB, both told him he needed to take it back to where he found it and call the local law enforcement, then they would determine if an investigation would be warranted or not.
Nobody seemed like it was very important, he got frustrated with the whole thing and just kept it.

Not much the FAA could do with it at this point, particularly for an unknown item found four years previously and has no identifying markings or serial numbers. For a fatal accident investigation, NTSB takes the lead, and ultimately after the investigation is complete the wreckage is released to the owner/heirs/insurance company.

Usually if you come across a piece of aircraft wreckage you would call the local police department, who would secure it as evidence and hand off to the appropriate department conducting the investigation.

It's definitely insulation from aircraft fuselage; however, finds like this do not necessarily point to any kind of accident. I'd suspect it may have been part of something that was jettisoned from a rocket launched from Wallops Island a couple of hundred miles to the north. They usually have multiple launches up there every year.

It could also be from one of several aircraft that were scuttled off the coast as artificial reefs, but it would have had to travel a bit to get to shore.
