The fishing gods smiled on me today!

Got 15 small blues, 4 small trout, a 13" black drum and this 27" "keeper puppy". All caught on a medium weight, 6.5' spinning combo, flipping 1/4oz soft plastics in the surf. Time for a fish fry!

Congrats on the mixed bag. Very nice pup. Thumbs up

Nice catch! Would you share a little more detail on your 1/4 oz. soft plastics? Does this mean 1/4 oz. lead head with a gulp? I have only recently moved into fishing with "fake bait" and am really enjoying it. Thanks! Fish

+1 I've never used artificial, surf fishing. Might have to try it! Very nice catch!

Thanks for the picture and report. Nice fish! I'm bringing along some of the Gulp saltwater baits to try the week after next. I never had any luck with Fishbites but they say the Gulp baits really work well. I'll also have my cast net just in case.

Great report Surf Fisher. Congrats on such a productive day. I've caught several of those 27 inches pups too. Like bringing in a bowling ball. Next time snap a picture of the rest of your catch. Would loved to have seen them too. Also noticed the Anemometer in the back ground. Now that's an impressive tool for some serious fishing. Nice!

Thank you all for the kind words... In answer to your questions, Yes... I use as light a lead head jig as conditions warrant as well as varying the style, brand(Gulp, Z-man, and Assassin) and color of soft baits. When I do bottom fish, Fishbites "Easy Flea" and shrimp seem to be the best producers. I like my cut bait as fresh as can be, so I usually jig up a small bluefish for bottom bait. I NEVER carry a phone or camera while I'm surf fishing, so you will never see pictures of my "releases".

Wow.... water temps have really fallen the past 10 days. They are still catching some nice puppy drum off the northern beach piers, but the trout bite in KH has been almost non-existent. Last Sunday I did manage to pop one keeper trout(21") out of the slough on a Gulp minnow, but I'm afraid it may be my last of the season. Time to head further south!

Pretty fish. I caught a 20" trout just north of the point yesterday morning and a 25" drum just before dark in Avon yesterday . Aside from those two fish it's been short trout , lots of small bules and puffers.

Where are the bigger blues?

RE: The fishing gods smiled on me today!

Pretty trout!

Ramp 55 yesterday and today provided several just legal flounder, one 19" flounder (dinner for two), small trout on shrimp and 8" bluefish. No drum for me. Fish

I slept in this morning but managed to get on the beach around 0730. Wasn't here 5 minutes and caught my keeper for the day :-)

Nice!

Thanks for the post. Beautiful drum. Bet it tasted great. I'd love to be wetting a line right now.

Nice catches Surfisher! We have been doing pretty good in the Nags Head surf as well as the sound. In the last few weeks we have caught a ton of short trout with some really nice 18+ inch trout mixed in. Lately the shorts have moved into the "almost keeper" size. Puppies are also being caught. When the ocean/ wind has been tough, we have done really well back in the sound. Our best color in the sound has been white head with a white assassin.

What weight jig head?

RE: The fishing gods smiled on me today!

I mainly use a 3/8 oz head. when it is very calm I might switch to 1/4 oz. I used to use red but the last several seasons it seems white and silver have worked better for me.

RE: The fishing gods smiled on me today!

Thanks Jighead. I thought it would be heavier.

Thanks Jighead. I thought it would be heavier.

We go as light as we possibly can and use med light 6-7 foot rods with 10lb braid, a very tiny spro swivel, and 10-15lb flourocarbon leader. Fish
