Looking for contractors? Be careful.

I won't mention any names. I have a friend who lives out of town who owns a long term rental on Bay Dr in KDH. She hired someone who was supposed to do some work, they took the money, didn't do any work, and even lived there until she went to court to have them thrown out.

Long and short, do your research and hire contractors with a good history and who have been around awhile.

Hopefully the court ordered her money to be returned and also was awarded rent for the trespass. Unfortunately, collection can often be difficult.

Ok,I have more info than I had in my 1st post. Turns out my friend was trying to help a "friend" and gave him the fix up job. The person turned out to be a low life, took the money, did nothing. The court visit was just to get him evicted, he has no assets. Lesson learned.

You will have a better experience most likely if you choose from this list. Over time, most everyone, local or rental property owner, develop relationships and use them over and over. Just a thought. Most of the best might be too busy to meet your timeline. There are bad apples in every industry and not just on the Outer Banks.

Might be nice to have a place on the board to recommend contractors that have done a good job.

Agreed, Steve. Many people do not look at this forum...though it certainly has the potential to be a very helpful sub forum.

A builder that I've heard many good things about (and seen his work) it not listed on that site that bobbyg posted...or if his company is, somehow I missed it.

Everybody we use is by reference. I ask:

1. The person we use for general handyman services to recommend someone, if it is something he doesn't do. he also owns rental properties.

2 The maintenance manager at our rental agency. They do a lot more in-house now, and they just replaced our decks and built a pergola. The rental agency also has a "yellow pages" sheet of recommended vendors.

3. My neighbors.

It's not uncommon for these folks to come up with the same names for me to call.
