camera advice

There are many talented professional and amateur photographers on these boards, I was wondering if anyone would give me some camera buying advice. My husband would like a camera for his birthday next week but I'm not sure where to start. He's having some health problems right now and I was thinking something without too many "bells and whistles". It will be used mostly for pictures of our grandchild and some outdoor beach and mountain photos. Probably no more than $300. I'd appreciate any advice, thanks!

RE: camera advice

A couple of years ago I bought my first camera a canon sx530hs from Amazon for $250. I got some great pics with and it has an attached lens which makes things simpler. I am very happy with it though I upgraded to a better Canon this year. I would buy it again.

RE: camera advice

The best camera is the one you have with you. If you aren't willing to carry whatever camera you pick, then even a top of the line SLR won't take a good picture.

Thanks all for the tips!

I like Nikon. They have a lot of point and shoot cameras under $300 and I've had several and find them easy to use and have been pleased with the photos

My first digital camera was a Canon PoweShot SX120 IS with 10X optical zoom. It took great pics and video. If I had to start over again I'd buy the same camera.

I bought the Canon T5 Rebel year before last in a package deal from Amazon and I'm very happy with it. I'm a noob and even I take some really nice pictures with it.

Thanks again for the suggestions, I went with the Canon power shot sx60 16.1 megapixel. Fingers crossed !
