Cycling Across the Bonner Bridge

Cycling Across the Bonner Bridge

Almost two months ago now, I was able to cycle across the Bonner Bridge on a ride with two pals from Nags Head to Ocracoke.

Prior to the adventure someone on the board had given us a heads up that there was only one lane of the bridge open to traffic. This was good recon and actually made cycling across the bridge much safer, as traffic was one way. We were able to follow the last car in the line to the next stop.

It's always cool to see the view from the bridge, but with the new span going up it was even more interesting.

This link is what some of it looked like from the bicycle.

Slomo,

That must have been a fun ride. How long did the ride across the bridge take? I watched the video, but it didn't look like the camera was recording the whole time.

Cheers,
Will

Cool video ad always, Tom.

Did I hear that the new Bonner will have bike lanes?

RE: Cycling Across the Bonner Bridge

Thanks for posting your video!! We have made the Hatteras Village to Ocracoke journey twice, it was great fun.

RE: Cycling Across the Bonner Bridge

I'm not sure exactly how long the ride across took, but know it was longer than usual because of the one way traffic due to the lane closure. I'd guess at least 20-30 minutes and maybe more.

We had to stop twice to let traffic from the opposite direction pass, but stopping on the bridge was pretty cool because of the beautiful scenery in every direction.

I have not heard whether, or not, the new bridge will have a bike lane...

I also enjoyed this video from day 3 of your trip. I got to see the Ocracoke and Hatteras lighthouses in the same cilp. I HOPE YOU DON'T MIND ME POSTING A LINK TO IT.

It looks like the new bridge will be built with eight foot shoulders on either side, which should be sufficient for biking.
