Trip Report: Behind the Scenes at the Research Pi

Taking an American Meterological Society Oceanography course this fall, which ended with a tour of the Coastal and Hydraulics lab at the Army Corps of Engineers Research Pier in Duck. Amazing day! This is the Observation Tower dedication.

Lots of seabird guano around....

Measuring temperature, conductivity and depth with sensors.

The facility from the end of the pier

and, the big finish...me with the Crab! Have you ever wondered what they are doing with this thing? Taking all kinds of measurements with lasers, sensors and the like. This drives along the bottom with wheels that are about 6 ft. in diameter.

and who remembers these? Surplus LARCS for hauling equipment today.

More Crab...

Very interesting, looks like you had a good time. I've always wondered where the cormorants hung out Theeth smiley .

Now that's really cool. I've walked under the pier dozens of times, but have never gotten to see it from the top. Lucky you. I'm glad you posted some pictures because I have always wondered what was up there.

Cheers,
Will

What exactly do the LARCS do? I remember seeing them frequently but never knew. I tried googling LARCS a minute ago..All results were about contraceptives. smiley

Thanks so much for posting about this, CoolBreezeKDH!! Is this the field your in already, or is this a course that a layperson would be able to take?

obxmini

obxmini, I can see from other threads you are interested in coastal studies smiley. I am a middle school Earth Science teacher and am taking this course through a grant for educators. I agree...it is cool studying the dynamics of waves and wave action on barrier islands. I am a VA resident, but I took this course in NC so I could take that trip to the pier! Fun Fact: There are permanent sensors installed in the seafloor to the N and S of the pier. So while you can walk on the beach under it and see the radar for studying waves installed in the dune line, it's pretty treacherous with submerged objects around the pier.
Here is a link to the course portal that has some cool connections, if you have some time to kill. Lots of data collection shared online. http://www.ametsoc.org/amsedu/DS-Ocean/home.html
