OMG Alligator River Bridge Construction

Scheduled end of construction 5/23/2019 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I made a day trip to Raleigh today and dodged any delays on the bridge. From the NCDOT website I learned the delays were likely between 8AM - 5PM so I planned and crossed going west at 7:30 AM. On my way back I called 511 to see if there were any major delays like the swing span being unable to close. The 511 operator basically read what was on the NCDOT website and mentioned the end of construction is set for 5/23/2019.

2019!

From NCDOT:
"Dare County, West of East Lake US-64 (US-64), Both Directions, Near River Road, 1 of 2 lanes closed.
Expected Impact to traffic is High
Start Time 9/26/2017 08:00 AM
End Time 5/23/2019 05:00 PM"

I hope the 2019 date is a typo.

This project was planned to take a long time. Completion in 2019 is correct but there will be no lane closures during the five months of May through September.

Is this only Monday - Friday or seven days a week? We were planning to come down Dec.16. across 40 and 64. Otherwise we will have to go through Virginia.

Taken from the NCDOT website Travel Information page: "Bridge repairs 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM Monday - Friday"

You should be o.k. With that said our daughter was coming here for Thanksgiving when the swing span was unable to close and she was hung up in that mess. I would take advantage of the facilities in the rest stop in Columbia as added insurance in case of a delay.

My gosh...a year and a half project? What are they doing? Replacing the river?

From the outer banks voice:

A $16.7 million contract awarded by the Department of Transportation to Flatiron Constructors of Morrisville calls for improvements that include a new epoxy deck overlay to prevent water from seeping into the bridge.

Also planned are joint replacements, repairs to the concrete superstructure and substructure and mechanical and electrical rehabilitation of the bridge’s swing span.

With the 2 lane stretch of U.S. 64 being one of two evacuation routes for OBX I had hopes this route was moving through the stages leading to construction. From NCDOT is looks like this project is not moving forward at this time.

We need another Marc Basnight representing our interests.

Those days are gone, all we have left now are idiots.

Apparently, you have never worked on a bridge project.

RE: OMG Alligator River Bridge Construction

if you are dead set on the route you can take 94 south from 64 after you cross the river at the Pocosin wildlife refuge down to 264 and then up past Swan Quarter back to 64 after the bridge. This time of the year traffic is non-existent and the drive is a nice one if you are not in a hurry.
All you will probably run into are a few duck hunters pulling boats.

RE: OMG Alligator River Bridge Construction

So is the bridge going to reopen Jan 16th? We are coming in Feb and usually come via 64. I looked at the DOT website, but it is not clear as to the actual closings. Thanks!

Here's the press release:

https://apps.ncdot.gov/newsreleases/details.aspx?r=14740

Sounds like it will be closed on the 16th and open up some time on 17th. It didn't say anything about being closed in February.

RE: OMG Alligator River Bridge Construction

It is closed now - 1/10/18. Should be open 1/17/18. In general adds an extra hour.

This is a very nice detour. Another caution on taking this route is be on a sharp lookout for wildlife in the roadway. Bears and deer are common.
