2018 Inshore Charter Advice

I would like to wish all my fishing friends a very Happy and "Fishy" New Year. As an Outer Banks Charter Captain I would like apologize for the unpredictable and sometimes poor Inshore fishing out of Oregon Inlet for last few years. Blues were sporadic and Spanish were decent sized but hard to find on some days. Personally I don't see this year being much better. It is very disappointing on a 4 hour charter to catch a Dozen fish when there should be consistent action. Who can explain this, I guess only the fish. What I want to suggest to you all considering an Half Day Inshore Charter is a 6 Hour Trip. Some boats may call this a 3/4 Day trip. A 6 hour trip generally allows you to fish both sides of a Tide Change and also get to more distant locations. Last year from late June well into July we had some good King Mackerel fishing. However, this fishing was on some days 15 to 20 miles from the Inlet. Generally, not within reach of a 4 Hour Charter. A 6 hour Charter was needed, an 8 hour Inshore trip even better. The Kings started a comeback in 2016, with increased stocks in 2017. As a bonus, occasionally small Dolphin were even caught. If it is in your budget, I strongly suggest booking a 6 or 8 hour Inshore trip this year. You won't be disappointed. Not all boats do a 6 hour or 3/4 day trip and even then some will not venture far enough to cash in on this better fishing. 6 Hour trips are offered on boats out of Wanchese and Pirates Cove, but not Oregon Inlet. Lastly talk to your Captain and get his agreement on a fishing plan and species. I always tell my customers What's Hot and What's Not on the day of the trip. If you have any questions send me a PM. Good Fishing and leave one for me.

Good to hear from you Pickle.
The boys, including my son, are out today hunting Tuna. Should be a good day for filming Wicked or whatever that show is.
