RE: Nags Head Unexploded Munitions Letter
Jockeys Ridge was used as a bombing range for the aircrews out of Va beach during WW2. No live ordinance was ever dropped there. Just Mk15 practice bombs. The vast majority were recovered after they were dropped and a few escaped going deep into the sand.
over the years they were recovered by people on walks and 4 wheelers when they allowed you to drive up the hill until the early 80's. There is no danger other than you cut yourself on the metal. they are filled with sand to give it close to the aerodynamic properties of a real 500 lb bomb.
