Capt'n Frank's is an institution on the Outer Banks, serving three sizes of all-beef Oscar Mayer hot dogs with a variety of accompaniments.
First of all, decide among the regular dog, a quarter-pounder, or a foot-long. Then, choose from at least a half-dozen specialty creations. The Chicago Dog tops the popularity list, with chili, mustard, onions, and slaw. Runner-up is the eight-item Junkyard Dog, topped with chili, cheese, sauerkraut, onions, mustard, ketchup, slaw, and relish.
We're partial to the Mad Dog, served with chili and hot peppers. If "going to the dogs" doesn't appeal to you, Capt'n Frank's also offers barbecue sandwiches and addictive nacho fries-french fries with chili, cheese, hot peppers, and sour cream. Steamed shrimp is served nightly in season.
Wash down the tasty morsels with a cold beer. Capt'n Frank's serves lunch and dinner daily Memorial Day through Labor Day. Off-season, the restaurant is open every day for lunch except Sunday.

Casual, quick, convenient, options. All of these things are important to me and this place delivers on all. I had the Chicago - chili, onions, coleslaw and mustard. Awesome!
Rating: Best dogs on the Outer Banks
This place is just amazing. Are you in a hurry and want a quick lunch? This is the place, you can be in and out in 10 min tops and the dogs are the BEST. Or sit outside in the covered area and take your time.
Rating: good food and the kids love it
they have a ton of choices on how to get your hotdog and I wish they just gave samples!!! Well worth the stop
Rating: Best dogs on the beach!
Gotta go there at least few times when I'm down. Love the hot dog combinations(the Chicago is my favorite) and their crinkle fries are second to none. The food is served fast and the wait staff is super friendly. What more could you want from a hot dog restaurant!
Rating: a tradition & great kids meal
We usually stop here at least once on our trip. It's always exactly what we expect. Yummy hotdogs & friendly/quick service. My kids love that their meal comes on a frisbee they get to keep.
Rating: Agree with the review directly below
Don't see what all the fuss is about. Nothing special about their hot dogs. They're not bad by any means, but don't expect to be blown away by them either.
wanted to see what the fuss was about- but I'm afraid I still don't get it. I think it must be nostalgia more than anything rather than exception hot dogs
Rating: ...agree with art8...
...really don't understand why folk think this place is that great...we were totally underwhelmed.........
Rating: Not that great
Always wanted to go here & now it's out of my system. When we opened up our boxes containing the hot dog, they looked so small it seems like it was a joke. Nothing special taste-wise. Just typical hot dog. Disappointed.
Rating: Love Capt'n Frank's!!
Capt'n Franks is on our list of places we have to go to each year when we're at the Outer Banks! It's just the best!
Rating: Great hole in the wall
I have been going to Capt'n Franks for about 3 years and it is a must visit at OBX. Food is great and prices are Fair.
Rating: still doing it
I have been going to Capt'n Franks for 30 years, and even though the place has changed in that time, the great hot dogs have not. It is a must for anyone who wants great food in a fun place.
Rating: Owner's son's shrimp is to die for...
So...you love spiced, steamed shrimp? Tried it at all the fancy "seafood places" on the Beach? or made it yourself? NONE will be finer than the shrimp made here. I dont know his secret - but seriously, get another side of butter and side of Bay Spice and get dirty. It will be in your dreams for years to come! WE LOVE YOU, CAP'N FRANKS!
Rating: Simply the best!
Our family has been coming to OBX for 15 years, and Capt'n Frank's is the one stop we HAVE to make every year, usually more than once. There's nothing else like it.
Rating: An Outer Banks Institution!
So I've been coming to the Outer Banks for, eh, about 30 years now, from the time I was born and raised in Virginia. Cap'n Franks is a mandatory stop for every visit for a hot dog and crinkle-cut fries. It's an Outer Banks institution, plain and simple. The food may not be Zagat-rated, and I've had better hot dogs before, but the service is good, it's and great value, and it's always fun to look at the pictures of the walls. If you've never been there before, it's definitely worth a visit.
Rating: captn franks
tom your an idiot, the capt'n franks chicago dog is the best, "detroit dog" give me a break, they chose the names basically to give a shout out to people from all different cities that visit the obx, the guy on the grill who cooks his butt off and still has time to talk to the customers told me that you always get some guy who thinks they are and expert on hotdogs and wants to challenge the name of every dog, he just laughed it off saying if you cant have fun at a hotdog restaurant on the beach you can't have fun anywhere. Captn Franks keep doing what your doing, i hope you are there for another 35 years
Rating: Just Ok
I love a good hot dog and Capt'n Frank's rates as just ok; nothing special. The Chicago Dog is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING like a real Chicago Hot Dog! If you dropped the slaw, this would be close to a Detroit Coney.
Rating: GREAT FOOD! SULLEN, SNOTTY SERVICE!
First (and last) visit
My first (and last) visit to this place was yesterday. When I walked in the door I glanced at the employees behind the counter and smiled. They didn't smile back. In fact, they stared at me like I was there to ROB the place.
I crossed my fingers and placed my order. As I stood waiting for my food to be prepared, I noticed the guy ringing on the register whisper to his skinny co-worker:
"Why are so many fat people coming in"?
Could it be because Capt'n Frank's sells FATTENING FOOD? Oscar mayer's REGULAR hot dogs have SEVENTEEN grams of fat.
Perhaps this guy is sullen and resentful that he has to flip hot dogs for a living instead of waiting for that dream job he's been waiting for Steven Spielberg to call him about.
In any case the owner should hire people who know how to welcome people to his establishment instead using workers who are so rude that they would talk behind their customers backs RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM.
'Never trust a skinny cook'
this place is amazing the chigago is awsome my family makes there own at home it is delictios i LOVE IT i Will go BACK
Rating: great for lunch
Fantastic hotdogs (chili, slaw, corndogs, you name it they have it). The place is often quite busy, but service is always quick. I only wish they used real cheese on their coney cheese fries rather than the liquid cheese goo.
Rating: Yum Corn dogs!
I know I did a review years ago but oh well, we have been going to Capt'n Franks since 1978. Was therer in June 2007 and heading back early November and their corn dogs are great.
Rating: The best hot dogs around.....
Try the Junkyard dog, you will love it, best hot dogs I have ever eaten, we just found this resturant this year, we had to eat there twice, will go back.....
Rating: Just about the best...!
We came down to our rented cottage and stopped here before checking in. It was fast and tasty! The hotdogs are good and the fries were hot. The service was good and all in all - we will be back! Great lunch place.
Rating: Good Hot Dogs
Will definetly be a place we'll visit year after year--Great Lunch!!
Rating: Good hotdogs
If you have a taste for a hotdog, this is the place to go.
Rating: the best!
Capt'n Franks is a tradition for my family! Every year we stop there at least once for their delicious dogs & shrimp. My favorite is their kraut dog and their OBX style steamed shrimp. It is a wonderful little place that everyone needs to try. I promise you'll love it!
Rating: Betcha Can't Have Just One!
Our family typically goes here once at the beginning of the trip and again before leaving because we know we will crave it until we have it. The best hot dog stand in America, hands down and the prices can't be beat. I crave this literally all year round...
Rating: Best Little Lunch Spot On The Beach
My family and I have been coming to the Outer Banks for over sixteen years, and let me tell you Capt'n Franks is the best. The staff is soo nice, and the place is very clean. it doesnt look like much from the outside but it is well worth it. I look forward every year to a nice cold beer, a junk yard dog and nacho fries. YUM! If you want a great place to get a quick bite to eat after you come off the beach, this is the place.
