A sister restaurant to Grouper's, Route 12 Steak & Seafood Co. opened its doors in the summer of 1999 to a booming business. The restaurant is decorated with a restored 1938 Mobil gasoline pump, old Esso signs, and gas-station memorabilia. In this casual roadhouse atmosphere, you can get fresh local seafood, certified Angus beef, barbecued chicken, and ribs that are fall-off-the-bone tender. This is a family-oriented restaurant, where kids are welcome and a children's menu is available. Dinner is served nightly; call for offseason hours.

Our 11 year old son loves the burgers here and we stop every year when we first get on the OBX.

1. The clams were foul.
2. The menu minimal.
3. The prices outrageous.
4. The ambience sub-par.
5. The hostess- RUDE.
6. Talk about children not being welcome, the hostess set us up in the middle of the small cramped restaurant, in front of the swinging kitchen doors- a reservation for 6 + twins, and adamantly interrupted our meal, and our mood with her comments that we needed to keep the babies in check.
7. We left with bad taste in our mouth, pocketbook and memory banks.
8. 9. and 10. the only saving grace was a gracious waitress, but my comments are for the hostess and the owner....you would never catch me dead in there again....

The steak was very good but the best part of my meal (I had the seafood platter) was the green beans and the bread. The seafood wasn't that good. It was off season so maybe that made a difference. Waitstaff was friendly.

I'm a bit of a steak snob so after many bad meals at Mike & Diane's we tried Route 12 to see if they were any better... we were STUNNED! The food has always been amazing and we've yet to leave hungry or disappointed and this is over the past few years since they opened, they are always good. We also had our rehearsal dinner here before our wedding with about 20 people and they served us with a smile and everyone was stunned at the quality of food - even my super picky New Orleans foodies! Try a meal here, you won't be sorry!

We stopped at Route 12 for lunch on 6/5/09. We shared a cup of the crab bisque - very good soup! I had the Backfin Burger (a burger with lump crab on it) which was cooked perfectly and had a generous portion of crab. It tasted fabulous! My wife had the crabcake sandwich, and raved about how good it was - she says it was essentially all crabmeat, and no filler.

The service was really good (we stopped in just before 3:00, so the place was nearly empty - but I get the impression that they're usually quite good) and I felt right at home.

The next day, 6/6/09, we went back, and had the exact same thing, because it was just that good! They close from 3 to 5 to prepare for dinner service, so get there before 3 for lunch.

The only down side is the location - it's at the Timbuck II shops, but honestly we thought it was a mini mart - the gas pumps threw us for a loop.

Do yourself a favor and try this place for lunch - you'll be happy you did.

Five star prices, so - so food, served in a gas station. If you are looking for a good meal look elsewhere. The food is way over priced, they allow no substitutions on anything and the meal is not that great.

We just got back from our Memorial day weekend trip and heading out we stopped at Route 12 for lunch. We have three small children so we were happy to learn it is a kid friendly restaurant with crayons and a children's menu available. Our drinks and food were slow to come out, considering the restaurant was only half full, but our server was great. I had the soft shell crab sandwich which was their special for the day, my husband had the chicken ceaser salad and my children split an order of chicken fingers and had a cheeseburger. In total the bill was $32, plus tip. Everyone ate well and truly enjoyed the experience. Its a perfect spot for lunch.

We were married in the Outer Banks in August of 2005, accompanied by twenty family members and friends. We dined at the Route 12 Steak & Seafood Co. after our ceremony and were very impressed with the quality of both the service and food. All of our expectations were met!!

We went to this restaurant for dinner in the middle of the week. We had a group of eight adults and four kids. It took our server a half hour just to take the drink orders. Then it took another half hour for the drinks to come, another fifteen minutes for her to come back to take the dinner order, and then another hour for the food to come. Yes, that's two hours and fifteen minutes we waited to eat. And with a baby in a high chair and another one crawling around under the table, that was not a pleasant wait. But the food was good. Just didn't want to wait three weeks to eat it.

I had take out for 12 people from this place. Food was good, good selection of dishes, but slightly expensive. However, even though I can't rate the waitstaff since I had a take out dinner, my order for 12 people was exactly right. Nothing missing or forgotten. I've got to assume that same attitude would be reflected in a sit down meal too.
