Four of us had dinner last night. My brother and I had the Corvina over Cous Cous with a delicious sauce, my sister-in-law had the Fried Chicken with Potatoes Au Gratin and my wife had the Roasted Duck in a Red Wine Sauce and Wild Rice - all four meals were excellent. The Key Lime Pie and Berry Cobbler with Vanilla Custard were also grand!

We have been going to The Paper Canoe since it opened some years ago. We always sit a the bar for dinner....a great room with stunning views. Love the décor and the cozy feel of the room. Nice wait staff and barkeep. I had the sausage pizza which was not up to par. My wife had the special, yellowtail snapper.....boring and tasteless. Couple this with run of the mill chardonnay at $11.00/glass and a poor selection of beers on tap made for a very disappointing dinner.

We ate at the Paper Canoe in August with a party of four. Our waiter was excellent and we all had a very good time. Everyone had a drink or two and each of us enjoyed our dinner. As stated by others, it is expensive, but I feel it was worth it. The food and service were excellent and the atmosphere is comfortable. Definitely not cheap eats, but everyone deserves a treat now and then.

Great view, wonderful service and outstanding food rounded out our dining experience at the Paper Canoe. Our group of four had a few glasses of wine and beer, the scallop appetizer, clam chowder, the stuffed shrimp, the duck and the tuna special. This was finished off with a rich and tangy key lime pie. Make reservations! I think the nicest part was the restaurant was full the entire time we were there, but it didn't feel crowded, nor were we rushed.

Knew we wanted to eat here but had a few stops to make first so we didn't make reservations. Arrived at 8:30p and they accommodated us at the bar. Definitely make reservations if you want a table. The bar still had a great sound view & wasn't too noisy. If making a reservation I think I'd actually prefer a table in the bar area rather than a table in the dining room.

Very good food. A beer + mixed drink, a wood-fired Margherita pizza & the Crab Cakes dinner, a slice of cabernet cheese cake & a slice of key lime merengue. With tip we were out the door for $102.

Service was great too. The bartender was really working hard, but made sure we were taken care of.

You will be a fan of Paper Canoe. Across from the Sanderling, they have something for everyone and a great wine and beer list to boot. The seafood is always fresh and the pizzas are always satisfying.

We tried the Paper Canoe for the first time this past summer and really enjoyed it. I highly recommend you give them a shot next time you're in Duck.

We love this place, the staff is friendly and the menu diverse and have not had a bad meal yet. A little pricey for some things but worth it.

We went there twice in September 2011 and twice in September 2012 - excellent meals each and every time. Wonderful appetizers, salads and entrees - some innovative pizzas as well, with a good selection of craft beers.

We went three times in the Fall of 2011 and two times in 2012 since it was an easy walk from our cottage.....had great meals every time. The following is my review of our first visit in 2011 from my journal:

After 5 wonderful dinners at the cottage prepared by our good friend and chef we decided to go out for a light/causal dinner. On the short list were Tortugas' Lie, Kill Devil Grill and the Blue Moon. However with the pending downpour we thought it better to stay closer than to have to drive 45 minutes or so in rain and standing water in Duck and environs. So now was the chance to try The Paper Canoe which was an easy 5 minute walk from our cottage but we opted to drive due to the rain. The PC is located in the former Duck News restaurant across from the Sanderling Inn, just south of The Left Bank.

We arrived around 5:50 and the place was beginning to fill up. I let Jane and John out to get a table while I parked the car. When I went in I saw them sitting in the dining room part of the restaurant in the middle of the room. I asked why we didn't get one of the 3 tables at the windows and they said the hostess said although they did not have reservations for these tables we could not take them because of our party of only 3. Actually all tables had a view of the Currituck Sound, however the window tables were much more inviting. OK rules are rules and I get it.

So I checked out the other room which was the bar with about 12 chairs and maybe 8 window tables (7 for 2 and 1 for 4). All the tables were filled but I saw chairs empty at the bar and went back to tell them that the other room had a much nicer "feel" to it.......besides I enjoy dining at a bar when having a casual dinner. So we made the move.

First thing I notice is that they have Dogfish Head 60' and Arrogant Bastard on tap.....this is good. John and I got the 60' and Jane ordered one of the chards....they only had two chards by the glass. The room has big windows and we are right on the sound, I mean right on. Now it is pouring....heavy.

We figure since the owner is from New Jersey and he is doing pies then they have to be good. If not his name will be mud. So we decide to have one Sausage (Italian sausage, broccolini, tomatoes and mozzarella); one Duck (House smoked pulled duck, ricotta, roasted garlic, Vermont white cheddar); and one Special (Peas, bacon, caramelized onions, cheese). For starters
Jane and John had Grilled romaine salad (with feta cheese, roasted tomatoes and roasted shallot-balsamic vinaigrette) and I had the soup special, a carrot soup.

The results: my soup was awesome.....wish I could tell you what else was in it but I can't. J&J loved their grilled romaine. The pies came out in about 20 minutes after our starters....just right. They were 10" pies with thick crust. I am not a huge thick crust fan but it was excellent.....light and cooked to perfection with just a little char. J&J loved their pies.....and I have to say my sausage was excellent, ranking up there with great Jersey pizza. The sausage itself was one of the finest Italian sausages I have tasted and the mozzarella was definitely top shelf. I finished mine and J&J each took 2 slices for lunch.

We had another round of drinks, this time going for the Arrogant Bastard instead of the Dogfish Head. Asked the barmaid about the name of the place and she told me the story.....find it here [url]http://www.ibiblio.org/eldritch/nhb/paperc/intro.html[/url]

We had a nice chat with a couple up from Kill Devil Hills about back in the day.....the Carolinian, By George and the candy cigs, the Windmill Point and the great kidney bar, and on and on. BTW....they loved their dinners as well.

All in all a nice place.....definitely will add to our list of favorite Outer Banks restaurants.
