Uncle Jack has Cancer

       Now that he has your attention he will hasten to add that it's no big deal. It's prostate cancer and he has had it for at least ten years. It was back in 2002 that he had a biopsy on his prostrate because of a sudden uptick in his PSA test score. The surgeon at Duke who did the biopsy wanted to operate immediately but a young radiation oncologist he talked to said that Uncle Jack might want to think about adopting a strategy of "watchful waiting" instead of rushing into treatment. Uncle Jack started to read up on the subject and the more he read about the distressing side effects of prostate surgery and radiation and chemo the more he liked the idea of watchful waiting. Anyway here he is, ten years later, still hale and hearty and the beneficiary of ten years of side-effect-free living which he can tell you is very important at his age.
       The reason he brings this up now is that he read a piece in the New York Times yesterday which reports on the latest large study done on treating prostate cancer and it strongly confirms the wisdom of what that young oncologist at Duke told him ten years ago.
