Question for Beach Girl

Just read in the Sentinel about some controversy over a shopping center at Avon. It said highway 64 and Terrace Dr in Avon. There is no highway 64 in Avon. Confused me (but that isn't hard to do). Thought you could give us the scoop if you read the article. Thanks a bunch.

I haven't read the latest Sentinal so can't report on what they said, but in Avon I do know that there is a battle about what is proposed for the corner of Route 12 and Tuna Terrace. So, maybe something is going on in Manteo on route 64 OR they are confused and wrote Terrace Drive when they meant Tuna Terrace and Route 64 when they meant Route 12 in Avon.
But anyway our battle is this: Tuna Terrace is the first highway south after the first traffic light in Avon. It is just past Stoney's Seafood/Texaco Station. It goes west into a residential area. They want to put a Wings/Reef big box store there. The lot is small and they want to buy 2 residential lots on Tuna Terrace rezone them so they can fit the big store and the parking. The residents are angry and don't want the 2 lots rezoned from residential to commercial. As a resident there are many other big stores I would rather see before a Wings.
Rodanthe fought them and won. Let's see how Avon does.

We stay in Avon and I would hate to see a big store like Wings there. We like the fact that the biggest store in town is the Food Lion. I hope that Avon wins the battle!!

Thanks Beach Girl. We have had a camper at Sands of Time for a long time and spend several weeks a year in that area. Hopefully, with retirement in March, can spend a lot more time. WINGS, yuk. That's the last thing needed. I like the T-Shirt shops we have. Anything else they sell, I don't need.

Hope Avon beats them down. If NC zoning laws are anything like NJ then it will be extremely difficult, if not impossible, for the developer to get the zoning chnage. That is simple "spot zoning" and is illegal.

Wings has got to be one of the ugliest if not the ugliest store on OBX. The one in Whalehead is simply disgusting!

You said it, YUCK! Maybe someone should tell them to move on down the coast, maybe some place like Myrtle Beach. Heck they wont even know another wings went up in town.

Why do people go into these stores? I've found that their "souvenirs" aren't much cheaper than regular shops (except for quality), and their "beach equipment" is actually more expensive than - Walmart/Kmart. So what's the deal?

We were really hoping that Isabel would wipe out that ugly monstrosity in Rhodanthe! Is there anything we, as non-locals, can do to make our voices heard over this proposed Wings? A petition anywhere? Someone we can call? We'll be back down in Avon the day after Christmas- I would love to help in this fight someway! Let us know.

I recently heard that there is going to be yet another new "Sunsations" store (similar to Wings, but brighter) on the site where the old Etheridge seafood restaurant and old Hardees' building used to be. The worse part is they filled the land about 4-5 feet OVER what their neighbors land is, so now not only are they bright, highly visible, but extremely HIGH. I'm sure the drainage off all that concrete parking lot onto the neighbors will be awful!

Poor Pigman's BBQ! They are right next door to the old Ethridge's resturant and are liable to get flooded every time there is a heavy rain.

Jax, I read that the resort and the restaurant are going to be torn down. The only thing that will remain is the pier.
