I found this this September just across the bridge from Manteo at the Alligator River NWR.

He's had a rough life. He's got major scarring on his head from a battle with something.

He's peeping over his back. Curiously, he barely rattled and never struck out. I went to my truck to get my snake stick to move him off the road as I took a few steps away from him, he headed to the grass.

These inhabit Dare Co. Even the OBX portion. There is a population of them at Bodie Island Light, and other areas where there are trees and scrub. Yet, you hardly ever see them. It's a treat when you do. But don't get too close. They have a horrible venom that can cause crippling injuries. But they are a reason OBX isn't overrun with rats and Marsh Rabbits. They are protected by law throughout NC.

DON'T TREAD ON ME. Seriously. Don't do it.

Impressive photos, Rowland - thanks for sharing. I saw one a few years back at Bodie Light House and was surprised by how large it was. Is this what's called a Canebrake in NC?

Yes, Canebrake. It's what the coastal plain Timber Rattlesnake is called.
