Folks,
I misspoke when I said the National Park Service would burn down the cabins on Shackleford Banks. An old friend of mine from Harkers Island reminded me of what happened.
After Shackleford Banks was designated a "wilderness area" the Park Service gave the owners of the cabins until midnight December 31, 1985 to remove their livestock and personal items including their fishing camps.
On a night in December of 1985 the cabins were burnt down by locals, not the Park Service.
It would be nice if the cabins were still there and being taken care of by the Park Service like they do the homes and other buildings on south Core Banks near the light house so visitors could see what life was like in those days.
I have old fishing movies I took that shows the cabins and the "Dolphins" in front of them but I never took photos of them. It was a mistake not photographing them. I must have thought they would always be there.
If anyone has photos of the cabins I will gladly pay them for copies or I can download them online.
Thanks again,
Mark
