Izzy - i am a lifelong Phils dude who spent some time in their system awhile back. This is a terrible signing of a "me-first" guy who may throw up 5 WAR numbers but decreases the clubhouse WAR by that or more. Clubhouses win games.

I thought they learned from the bad Ryan Howard contract that wrecked the team for the last 9 years. Evidently not.

Best hope is they can go even-up on a Harper/Trout trade in next two years to get rid of this albatross.

Harper better get off to a good start and do community works, or he is toast.

Just when you thought the Phillies were gonna be a contender again.

What a colossal mistake.

Glad the Dodgers did not feel the need to step up any more than the 5 years they offered.

There’s something about him I. Don’t like. Maybe cuz he thinks he’s “all that”. And I thought we’d be looking for a pitcher rather than a fielder.
Hatterasnc, I thought he had some kind of no trade clause in this $$$$$ contract, no?

Full no trade, no opt out for player or team options. 13 years of drama. Ugh.
Hopefully he will waive his no-trade clause and go west to LA, now that Borassss has been paid.
The Phils were an average team last year, on the rise with Kapler building chemistry.
The Nats were a good team on the fall due to bad chemistry (read: Harper).
I guess it's win now, put fannys in the seats and watch another 80 win season.

Ok , I agree the length and amount of money on this contract is crazy. Let's get real , he is not going to stay in Philly for 13 yrs . If things don't work out they can trade him or let him go. What the Phillies need now is Mike Trout but that is a few years away ,if ever. Bryce offers the best chance to get into the post season now and that is what it is all about, correct?? The guy plays hard and that is what Philly will expect and hopefully gets out of this . For the past few years Phillies management was getting hammered for not spending money to get the talent they need to contend and they would be getting hammered if they failed to land him . Lets hope for the best !!

Middleton is blinded by the success he sees the Eagles have had, and the Sixers have coming, and this is a total panic move. This city would have been all in on Mike Trout in 2021.

The fan base here is going to be all over Harper, and not in a good way. His personality doesn't mesh with what this city sees in a sports hero. Harper is selfish, he won't take well to getting booed by the fans when he is in a slump, and held under a microscope by the media and sports radio.

This has catastrophe written all over it.

What happens if any of the pitchers end up having Tommy John surgery? How deep is the farm system? Backup infielders? Catchers?

Izzy -just watched the introductory press conference.
I think I was hasty, judgmental and just plain wrong in my previous comments. When he discussed changing his number in honor of Roy Halladay and why he went against his agents wishes for an opt-out (and hinted about a certain someone coming off contract in two years smiley with shades ) so he could dig roots and stay, I think it was genuine.

I fell prey to the hype. I was wrong and now say give the man a fair chance to play the greatest game ever created.

I agree. Lot of negativity coming out about Bryce especially from Washington. I have been reading the Washington press and other sources who do the usual Philly fan bashing .Same old same old stories about booing and Santa .Even Chuck Todd ripped the decision on national news .Philly is a demanding town and if they don't think you are giving 100% they will let you know. That is only fair in my view . Let's hope for the best and see what happens !! Go Phils !!

I probably shouldn't even post in this thread, being that I'm not a baseball fan at all, but I will anyway. I've been up here long enough to know that Philly fans suck. Yup, they suck. They try to justify it with passion and wanting to win, but that's just a smoke screen for not supporting your team. Real fans stick with a team through the good and bad (and make no mistake, all teams will have both). I've been here since '95 and the band wagoners are the real deal up here. You're not winning, they are not supporting.

Now, given this, my son is excited over this Brice signing. NC doesn't have a pro baseball team, so he's all in on the Phillies. I've warned him, but he's still in. I hope it ends well since I have no meat in this game, but I'm guessing it won't.

What in the world does Donald have to do with this? Very strange to bring him into a sports topic.

Some love Philly ...some don't . All comes down to what you want to believe and how you react to the spin about Philly fans . I grew up in Philly so I guess I am biased , you didn't . You paint with a very broad brush when you say what you did and it is not fair to all Philly fans . It gets real old after awhile .

You're right, I'm not from here. I have been here for 20+ years though, so it's not like I don't have any opinion. My wife was born and raised here and agrees with me. There is no spin, I've talked to plenty of Philly fans that are proud of the reputation. It's real, even if you don't like it. You can hide behind that "passion" label all you like, but you should support your teams always, not just when they are good.

Anyways, I'm done in this thread. It'll be interesting to see how the Philly fans react to Harper when they are not winning... Good luck. I'd love to see another Phillies parade.

As a final note to this ..I guess Philly fans are the only fans in America who are guilty of this . That is what bothers me when people point to Philly fans as being bad .

No doubt that this is not just a Philly thing. Sorry if I implied that. In baseball, I'll always be a Reds fan. My aunt worked for them and they were good to her until she passed. I have a couple of Johnny Bench signed items that I cherish.

Most Carolina people are Braves fans, so I definitely don't go with the flow.

I think all teams nationwide have die hard fans and fair weather fans. It’s not exclusive to Philly..
