Okay I guess the first question would be where are you staying? Second question would be how many people and also any children and ages? Why these questions? My name is Pickle, aka Captain Paul. I own a Charter Boat and am very proud of the fishing opportunities on the Outer Banks. I always feel that charter customers should have a complete understanding of what to expect. There are many choices and I'm sure you will get a variety of recommendations. However let's deal with the first two questions. If you are staying anywhere from the four wheel territory/Corolla down to South Nags Head , possibly even Northern Hatteras Island (Rodanthe) you will probably use a boat out of the three marinas that access the Ocean through Oregon Inlet. Those Marinas are OBX Marina, OIFC and Pirates Cove. If you are staying in Avon, Buxton or Hatteras you probably will use a boat out of Hatteras and access the Ocean out Hatteras Inlet. Size of party is important because 99% of Outer Banks Charter boats are strictly licensed by the Coast Guard for a maximum of 6 people (fishing or not, children and Adults). Okay that's basic info. Now let's talk trip and price. Most 4 and 6 hour trips fish in the Ocean near shore and cost between $550 and $625 for a 4 hour trip. A 6 hour trip can be $775 to $900. Why the difference in pricing? Some prices are fixed by Captain or Marina Associations, other try to be competitive. Sizes of boats can vary from 26 foot outboard powered boats with little room to move around to 40 plus foot custom fishing boats. Actually you get what you pay for, except for price fixed marinas. In August most Half Day 4 or 6 hour trips will be Inshore Trolling for Bluefish, Spanish Mackerel, King Mackerel and False Albacore. These fish are fun to catch but not real big. These species will run from a few pounds on up to maybe 10 for a King or Albacore. Lots fun, generally a short boat ride from the Inlet. Okay that's all Generic Advice. Boat selection? If you have children or older people you would favor a bigger boat. Would you want to he in choppy waters in a 30 foot boat or a 45 foot boat? Do want a cabin and full size head or a "Porta Potty"? Please understand what you are getting. There is a lot more to say but I would like you to come with me. I would like to send you a PM with my own info. One last thing, the Outer Banks has one of the safest and professional charter boat fleets in the country.
