Hooked Something BIG, that I did not want

Went out Friday with my son who had a rare Friday off and found some puppy drum and did some looking around getting familiar with the waters. Learning that there are MANY no wake areas here, but that is another topic.

Got invited to go out with a friend Saturday morning. He lives in the area and was going to show me around. Well with the wind being NE and brisk, it limited the ares we could go. He took me to a spot that he likes that was in the lee of a shore and we started the catch drum and trout right off. On about the 10th cast I hook something big.

My friend thinks it is a ray but when I finally get it to the surface is it a logger head turtle that I have hooked in the front flipper Confused

It is about 2 feet across and not happy. So I am using a barbless hook so I think just give it some slack and maybe it will come out, it worked on a few fish already. No luck. So I work to get him close enough to the boat so I can just push on it with the rod tip and it should just come out. After a few minutes he is close to the boat and I make my move and the rascal bites off the tip of my rod!! Confused smiley

I was worried that he got the tip in his mouth and eat it, but I got back a broken rod with the tip dangling, but did not get the jig head. The friend that took me out was shocked that I hook one as he has never seen a turtle in the area before.

So I guess you never know what you are going to get on the water.

I'm a little surprised by the no wakes. What area were you in?

That turtle will be fine. Hook should be gone in no time.

Maybe he's reporting on Va fishing. His first posts were in the Va rivers on Stripers.

Yes, this is fishing in Norfolk. Oh so close to OBX.

If you look closely you can see a naval ship in the top right corner.
