I was going to post this earlier, but when I saw that a few of the members here recently lost dogs, I thought it best to hold off.
2 years after our beloved Duke passed away, we got another puppy. We hadn't planned on getting another dog, still not over losing Duke, but my wife saw this puppy on a rescue website and said she want to go see him. We went to his foster house and we all feel in love with him. Well, everyone except for my son. He was OK with getting another dog, but Duke will always be his dog (they grew up together only 1 year apart in age).
This happened in mid July and he was 14 weeks old. The last one left of a litter of 11 (1 didn't make it). Mother was estimated to be 1 year old and part black lab. No idea what the father was. She was brought up here from Georgia by a local rescue group and given the name Lovie. Very affectionate, all of them. We picked him up 2 days later. Turns out we know the women that reviews applications, interviews families, and approves them, so she bypassed all of that and approved it.
We let my son name him since he was still not sure and we wanted to give him a connection to the new puppy. After trying a few names, he picked Coby. Named after the UNC basketball player Coby White (now with the Chicago Bulls). Coby proudly wears a UNC collar and his name sake, Coby White, has seen pictures and approves of the naming.
The foster house that raised Coby also created a Blog so you could see them grow. He invites all the new owners to post about their dog and how they are doing. One of the owners did a doggie DNA to find out what he was. It came back (I don't remember the percentages) Black Lab, Staffordshire terrier (pitbull), Boxer, and Border collie. Coby has a Lab body (with webbed feet) with a big terrier head. No really, his big head is the first thing everyone comments when they see him. It definitely adds to the "awe, so cute" comments.
He's 5 months old now and weighs over 35 pounds. They guess he'll be in the 50-60 range, but it's just a guess. He is very affectionate and always has to be laying on you or touching you when he sleeps. My son and him are best buddies now and have epic play fights. When I come home from work he charges me and does the butt wiggle dance until I pick him up so he can lick my face. No sure how long I'll be able to do that. In the morning, when my wife releases him from his crate, he jumps on the bed and pounces on my head demanding that he's allowed to lick my face. Crazy dog.
Below are some pictures of him. None of them really capture how big his head is.
