Offshore vs. Inshore charters

Hi all! I'm new to OBX Connection but not to the OBX. We've been coming with family for 13 years and love it! Our girls have grown up always having a "countdown" to our vacation posted somewhere in our home. smiley We've experienced a lot of things on our vacations (we've stayed in Duck and Corolla) but never a chartered fishing trip. I'm looking for input on an inshore charter. The lower price is a plus but we're wondering if the experience is a good one? I'm assuming this depends on a lot of things - charter company, captain, etc. If anyone has any info to share it would be appreciated. We will be staying in Corolla May 31st-June 7th. Thanks so Much!

I just posted a lengthy response on the main site. I explain Inshore Fishing in detail. The difference between Inshore and Nearshore depends on the Marina and Boat. To many they are one and the same. Offshore us a totally different world. So is price. An Offshore Trip will start around $1850 or $1900 and can go up to $2200 . I will send you a PM about my boat

The expert “Pickle” has spoken! To add to what he said offshore is full day and is Gulf Stream. Offshore charter would be tuna, dolphin (Mahi), wahoo, etc.

Night time inshore drum charters are my favorite, some of the big ones might be back in the sound in another week or two. Would probably have to go out near Hatteras or Avon to have the best chance during your trip.

Don't have to worry about sunburn or heat stroke either - some of those inshore afternoon trips get hot on a center console.

A lot of it is about the captain, the guys I enjoy fishing with are a little more of the salty/angry captain types they seem to be better at finding the fish. But it rubs some people the wrong way, they would rather have an easygoing trip than a guy yelling GRAB THE ROD HURRY HURRY HURRY NOW REEL and using some choice language.

My advice would be to just call a few captains of charter trips and talk to them. See if you find somebody you like and get along with, and tell them what you're looking to get out of the trip - relaxing time on a boat with a chance of fish, or you only want to fill up the cooler and limit out. Charter captains aim to please, they would love to give people a great experience so booking a trip with them becomes an annual event.

Some good advice by "Sold". If you can, deal with the Captain on Bookings. There are 100 + Charterboats on the Outer Banks. All shapes and sizes, different amenities, fishing specialties and YES very different crew personalities and experience. Choosing a boat by "Mega Websites" , $$$$ Advertising and Videos might be disappointing if the Captain and Crew are not right for your party eg, small children or your fishing expectations. Dont forget booking with various Booking Websites, Marinas etc might not give you the boat you want or even give you a chance to interview the Captain and ask questions before committing. Do your homework. Save one for me.
