Wreck fishing byo rod and reel

Ok, so a while back my friends and I went out on the Miss Hatteras. We were reeling them in the whole time and it was a blast. A family next to us had brought their own rods and seemed to be reeling them in twice as fast and more easily. What set up do you think they had? I did not even think to ask them at the time...

A good reel that is smooth with "infinite anti-reverse" is a pleasure to work with. I do not know what the headboats supply, but my guess is they are cheap reels that can be easily serviced/replaced as needed. As far as reeling them in faster, that's going to be the gear ratio. A reel with a higher gear ratio like 6/1 or 7/1 will do more rotations of the bail (or spool) per rotation of the handle. It allows you to gain line faster, but you sacrifice power. A lower gear ratio is good for reels that you'd use when you target large fish, e.g. the large gold Penn/Shimano reels you've probably seen on charter boats. I have higher gear ratios on my medium sized spinning rigs that I use from the pier and surf and then lower ratios on my larger conventional rigs.

EDIT: I do have a Daiwa Saltist conventional reel with a pretty high ratio, but it also has a larger handle (longer radius) that helps with any power issues, supposedly, but I've never caught anything bigger than a 5 lb skate with it. :-)

Simply use a higher Gear Ratio. Older style Penn reels are standard Headboat equipment. Penn Long Beach, Gti and Gti2, Senator 3 & 4/0. They are all 2 and maybe 2.5 to 1. If you can find a solid 5 or 6 to1 without breaking the Bank you will get them up faster. New Penns are Junk. There is an Okuma model that is pretty solid. We just bought 8 Bass Pro Shop GC Series Levelwinds at 5.5 to 1. Haven tried them but seems pretty good

A full spool retrieves more line per turn than a spool that's only half filled. Those inches add up when you're 100 feet down.

I seemed to always get the half full ones back in the old days. I'm too old to do the overnight 24 hour trips out of Morehead City on the Capt. Stacy IV. Sure was fun catching snapper, trigger fish, sea bass and grouper. Tasty fun.

The 24 hour trip allows you to catch and keep 2 daily limits.

I hope the galley still serves fresh grouper sandwiches. Fresh caught and delicious. I swear it wouldn't take her 10 minutes to walk out, catch one and start making grouper salad sandwiches.

Is there any rest on the 24 hr. trip? I guess one could nap when they want.

if anybody is interested in Wreck/Bottom fishing on the Outer Banks, not Morehead shoot me a PM. our Tilefish season opens May 1st and Black Sea Bass is May 14th. Some great fishing and not many boats do it right. It's all fishing 30 miles out, not Inshore. Great eating fish and the most productive Outer Banks fishing trip available. Lets go fishing.

"Is there any rest on the 24 hr. trip?"

The Captain Stacy had a nice cabin. Sort of like sleeping on a Greyhound or Trailways in the old days. It was fairly comfortable. Of course in our group the guy who got the most sleep had to drive the car back to Richmond.
