Is there anyone who still makes the custom rod racks? I have to figure out a better system. Too much wiggle in a surf mate

Thats a hard one anymore. Rick that used to do the racks and instals in manteo passed away 4 years ago. Since then it has been very hit or miss. If you have a rack and want it installed try Jeff at 252-57-8452. He runs obx truck outfitters. I have seen one of his installs on a new tacoma and it was a clean job.
I do not know if he does custom rod rack building but there are 2 places in Currituck that will fab up a rack but don't do installs.

I'm not sure if it's a rumor or not so I'll ask. Will the cops write a ticket for obstructed view if front mounted? (fishermen, don't lie this time smiley )

We have a front rack, although I wouldn’t consider our view impaired. It’s never been a problem. I do think your license plate must be visible.

I found it... enforcement issue around Assateague... about 2010 and again in 2016.
Rod rack (or cooler, or bucket, etc.) can't block any headlights, turn signals or front license plate. So it wasn't the rods but the rack itself guilty of obstruction.

Just a word of caution if you have never used a rod rack, if you have long rods, 13ft., add another 2 feet and those rods are sticking up in the air 15 feet. Just be aware of low hanging tree branches you might be driving under. You don't want broken rod tips on your way to the beach to fish.

^^^ Thank you Judy. You are absolutely correct in adding those things. Sometimes we never realize just how high the rods are in the air.

I think it depends where you are.

If you are in a beach town not a chance. If you are in Middle Ohio, probably a chance. but I never heard of anyone getting a ticket to be honest.

I remember when the baskets you hitch mount first became popular. I was told because it hid the license plate I could be ticketed. I got ticketed a few time with that basket on and never got told a thing about it. Only to slow down. LOL

Speaking of Racks, I use a rack that is roof mounted by RhinoRack. made for Skis or Rods. Because I live in beach town, the rods are always on the Buggy and I have found the Vertical mounts are fine for the weekend warrior but for someone who is everyday they tend to get annoying.

Yep- most vehicles I see around out there have basket racks on front or back. For the interstate heading out there I keep them broken down in the car or in PVC pipes strapped on top.

That's a given.
Was commenting on the everyday use being annoying.
In my experience it is exactly the opposite. Much easier to go out in the predawn and pull the plug on the cooler and let it drain as you go get new ice and check your reels and get out on the beach quicker. When I am doing any driving off the beach I pull the rack and either put it in the bed of the truck or leave it home. I leave the rods at the house unless I'm fishing because of random damage potential and simple thievery.

I love having a basket rod rack, but it does have a drawback that you may have been referring to Alexy. We use an SUV with the rear mounted rack. To access the back of the car we have to take the rods out of the rack to grab tackle boxes, chairs, stakes, etc. Minor, but real annoyance.

I was not talking about the baskets, I have one on the rear that I use in the summer. I am talking about just the rack attached to the front bumper to carry the rods and nothing else. Those are annoying IMO.

Sorry I'm late to this party, but I have bought receiver mount cooler racks and rod holder from Platinum Products in the past. Look for a front mount receiver (4" square tube trailer hitch) for your vehicle and many of the racks will work for you.

Alexy, it seems to me that a tree grabbed one of my Mackerel casting rods in your neighborhood one year! What a surprise, I had to stop and yank it down...
