I'm pretty stoked for this. I do wonder about the 2 rod rule...do they mean only 2 lines in the water, or literally 2 rods per angler, even if the lines aren't in the water. I generally carry 4, but only fish 1 at a time since I throw artificial lures mostly.

The rules also suggest underhand casts only. That ain't gonna happen for sure.

The article has a 1+ hour video from today's opening. Start watching at 8:10 and you'll see a dude overhand cast and he has a pier cart with 4 rods in addition to the one he's holding. There were some park staff there as well so I'm assuming they don't care too much.

Prohibited: "Fishing with more than two rods per angler." I would think a rod with the line out of the water is not considered fishing. But your guess is as good as mine, I am only right about half the time.......

I always hear how strong the current is there, but I mainly throw artificial lures so it isn't as much of a concern. I just wonder how stout the gear needs to be, and how heavy the weights when bottom or sheepshead fishing. For example, I don't ever need to go over 3/4 oz (that's 0.75...not 3 to 4) for sheeps in other spots, but many go overkill, in my opinion.

Nothing irks me more than guys showing up at the little bridge with surf rods, throwing fishbites on 3 oz sinkers, when 3/16 oz holds just fine.

I'm assuming this spot is different...but I bet most will still overdo it on the weights.

If you go by NDMF rules it would be 2 lines IN the water. Piers count any rod on the rail as IN USE if it is in the middle on the rack they do not count it. I would also think the traditional rules rules for the end of the pier fishing would apply to the end the bridge.

Drove by it today and it was packed with fishermen! Alexy has some good advice on this new fishing area!!

My dad and I went there today for an hour during the last 2 hours of falling tide. The current was ripping! We caught a bunch of very small sea bass and pinfish. Everyone else was doing the same. We ended up at Jennettes and saw an upper 40’s (inches) drum caught. Fishing there was slow as well, but my dad got a couple of 12” sheepshead. I might give the bonner pier another visit in the future and if it’s much of the same I won’t return. The concrete remnants of the supports are massive, too. Despite its length there are only short windows of fishable space because you need to be between the old columns in order to land anything.

They forgot to mention to pick up and put all the trash in the trash container. There is a very lg. trash container on the parking lot also. PLEASE KEEP THE AREA CLEAN, it all ends up in the water sooner or later.

Suggestion: For very Basic Bottom Fishing, Slack Water (High preferably) is best. Close to Pilings will help. Naturally there will be people fishing live bait, working lures etc.

We'll see how it goes...I will be in OBX tomorrow, hitting up all my usual spots, but plan to give Bonner bridge a try.
