Thanks for sharing, Fossilridge!
Hats off to you and your wife! Sounds like a great time, but I'm sure it took a lot of prep and planning. Coyotes are everywhere now, it seems, and that has put a damper on my camping (for a couple of decades now!). At least that's the excuse. Used to do year-around camping.
Closest my wife and I came to your experience was a 3 day/night canoe trip on the Saco River in Maine in a September, camping on the sandbars. My wife is a city girl. We cooked.
Same feeling as you had: great time, but don't know that we'll do it again. Got eaten alive by mosquitos! Spent a few days later at a rustic camp at Moosehead Lake in Maine. Not sure I could convince my wife or kids to do either similar now.
Did you have mosquito or animal issues?
We tried to be hyper aware of our surroundings while in the back country. Not sure if it was us or just luck, but we did not have any negative encounters with animals. In Yellowstone we had come across numerous bison and we made certain to give them PLENTY of room. Also saw a few bears. While fishing we always were looking over our shoulder.
No mosquito issues, but we did have to deal with black flies while fishing for cutthroat at the second meadow on Slough Creek.
A coworker is back in the office today from a two week trip in Yellowstone. I told him like I tell everyone who goes to Yellowstone...get off the beaten path if you can because it is so worth it.
