Beach Access, Salvo

Hello,
Our family just rented a house semi-oceanfront in Salvo for July 2022. I was trying to determine the closest beach access. Can anyone confirm if the end of Ocean Spray road has an access ? I see a gap between the properties on the dare County Gis. We are staying in SalvOasis on Fifth street. Thanks in advance for you help.

There's a public beach access once you turn south at the end of Ocean Spray. Your house is the blue dot, red line is public beach access route. They just built two huge houses near the access where the photo looks like huge sand lots. Don't believe there is one where you are referring.

Thanks for the quick reply, Probably should of looked at this before we booked (I usually do) the Semi-oceanfront description I guess made me think there would be a short route. Looks like there might be a public access on the end of park street (I see 2 post there on Google earth) in the other direction also. Guess we have to see which is easiest with small kids.

Other option might be to find an access to drive to.

I don't stay in Salvo for that reason.

We have stayed in Avon the last 10 years for shorter walks to the beach and better access also, we actually had a Oceanfront in Avon pre-reserved from earlier in the year but when the owners decided to increase the base rate 30% Confused , we decided to switch the reservation and had to settle due to the amount of bedrooms we needed and 2 dogs coming along.

You already signed lease too probably, right? If you could do with 4 brdrooms, you could do The Crewes Nest, which is in same rental program, and right in front of that access.
View from that house prior to big ones being built. You can see the access along the white fence.

Yes we signed the lease already, we needed five bedrooms, pool, hot tub to fill everyone's needs (lol, it is vacation). I think the house will be great, owners advertising a full fenced in yard for dogs for 2022 ??

may i suggest the new drive to public access i believe it is being built in Rodanthe. That was going to be our access when we rented soundside because the walk was too far. The locals can tell you if completed.

Are those lots actual accesses? Or are they vacant lots? Just wondering how it works down there.

You can search for ocean accesses, but it's not a layer on the GIS that describes properties. It's on the Dare County Community Map. There are a few layers you can turn on there like ocean access or sound access, dog parks, fishing, etc.

I did look at that portion of the GIS also but really didn't show much other than the ORV access. When I look up and down the coast line in Salvo using the GIS it seems every place there is a break in the property lines like at the end of Ocean Spray Road looks to be a Beach Access. I'm hoping maybe someone that is familiar with that street or that lives down there could chime it ?

At this point it is what it is, but would be nice to know for sure. Exvile had mentioned the boardwalk access down a little further.

After doing some further investigation of the empty lot that is for sale I found this photo that looks like some people are heading straight for that break in the property line where the telephone pole is.

I don't live there, but I vacation in that exact

area multiple times per year, and I am about 99% sure there is no access between those houses. The two houses next to each other where you feel may be an access are Chelsea, with Sun, and Raindance, with Surf or Sound.

Having said that, I wouldn't be surprised if people walk along Raindance's fence, and use private access. We had multiple families walking through the property we rented last year and we don't even stay oceanfront. The photo of people walking.....they are probably going to turn right and walk to the access, or use private property.

As for driving to Rodanthe for parking, there are actually 5-6 spaces right there where the public access is. If you see the little traffic island in the first aerial I posted you can see a larger blacktop area that is parking spaces, with sidewalk out to the wooden boardwalk.

Bring a big bottle of Grey Goose and approach the closest ocean front house. Get the owners/renters attention and kindly ask if you can use their beach access for your stay. If they say yes, offer the bottle. If they say no, drink it yourself!

It was my understanding that aside from your home and lot your beach ownership ends and becomes NPS property. Consequently, all beach access is usable to the public. I’m not sure that any owner has private rights to access . Anybody else remember this?

If there is a space between property lines that is a beach access.

There is direct beach access at the end of Park Rd just to your north. It’s an easy walk. We’re currently building a house a couple of lots away. It’s a very quiet area and the beach is awesome!

Thank you Thumbs up I worry too much lol. I don't mind a little walk and exercise, especially during a week of indulging in good food, adult beverages and relaxation. Looking forward to July 16th Big grin

Just rented in Hatteras Colony in September Oceanfront . It is a haul to get to the beach ,rented a big wheel cart and had trouble getting it thru the dunes . That's the way it is in Salvo , quiet but not easy to get to the beach .

Getting close, was wondering if the park rd access is our only option?

Thanks

I just ran past the house this morning. You will be happy to know the fenced in yard is complete and looks very new. The pool looks good as well. This house is in the middle of 5th St, equal distance to both Ocean Spray and Park St, and 5th street itself is not paved.

Rather than get super lengthy here, I will send you a message with your options. You certainly have a few.

Thank you ! Salvo is a nice quiet spot, even in summer. I know those double dunes are a bear to get over, but they are much appreciated when the storms come through.
