Why are they ALL sitting on their hands. Manteo

We all love Manteo, it's a small little place with water on all sides. This is the same water our kids play in, the same water we eat the fish from, the crabs, the shrimp and eat the oysters from. If you walk the Manteo Harbor you will never find ANYONE looking at gas and oil discharges from the boats ducked in the marina, you will also find areas alone the water without ANY trash cans so visitors and residents can place the trash in. Go and enjoy a day of boating and you will find no trash cans on the boat ramp at Bowsertown. Drive west over the old Mann's Harbor bridge to the newer boat ramp and commercial lot and you will find no trash cans. Where do they think all the trash goes? Don't they know that during the month of June, July, Aug. and Sep. trash rains on us here and it goes in the water. Maybe they don't notice in their ac offices.
There is always an excuse, always. There are many people trying to do the right thing for everyone on their own but it seems that those at the top just don't care! Please guys GET OFF YOUR HANDS get out there and try to make things better for you, me and the environment.

Is it too much to ask for people to be responsible and handle their own trash disposal? Who is going to daily service these newly installed trash cans? It's been my experience no trash can at all is better than a poorly maintained/ overflowing trash can.

I have never in my life taken trash out of my boat at the ramp, and am struggling to visualize somebody climbing back in their boat after hauling it out just to throw trash on the ground. Write some tickets and haul some people to jail.

I was thinking the same. It's a lot easier to just throw trash in the cooler or a compartment and then get it out when you clean up the boat later. If these boat ramps also have pier or shore fishing then I can see cans having some value, but not for boaters.

you will also find areas alone the water without ANY trash cans so visitors and residents can place the trash in.

That's surprising. I've never noticed this, but admittedly haven't looked for any. You can walk around the marina in 10 minutes, 30 minutes if you stop and look at everything and at most I might have a water bottle in hand. Hopefully they have cans around any picnic tables where one might stop for lunch, at least.

What do you with your trash? It's a different world today. Just take a chair next to a boat ramp and see what, when and how. They come up the ramp at the end of the day look around see no trash cans and they take the junk in the woods or on to their truck bed and as they drive away it goes all over the place.
There is no reason why the town has no place for people to put their trash in and no reason why there is no trash cans at the boat ramps in Manteo, is not like we have many.. All they need to do is service it four month a year ones every month.
When you have no place for the trash to go in the site becomes A DUMP and the next thing people do is trash the place like bringing their home trash, dumping their deer in the fall and so much more. We need to take care what we have here or we will loose it, we pay taxes, we vote and I am sure you most people would want to see out town clean!

What do you with your trash?

Spearo#1

I pack out what I pack in, as any responsible person would do. If we’ve got a littering issue, and it’s as easily observed as you say, a few well positioned LEO observers should have no problem writing tickets for it. Won’t take but once or twice for word to get around.

Once you put a trashcan out, you will have to service it DAILY during the summer, not monthly. If it fills up, people will dump their trash on the ground next to it creating a bigger mess. What already stretched resources will be required for this little endeavor? Who pays for it? All because a handful of people are morons? Address the real issue, without creating another one in the process.

We keep a plastic bucket in our boat and toss beer cans and empty water bottles in it. Its quite tall and items do not fly out. We consider ourselves friends of the beach AND sound. We did a trash pick up after the last nor easter in our neighborhood along with other neighbors. We just all chip in. Heck...we even take trash bags out on ramp 49 daily and pick up trash on the beach. It's our "front yard" so to speak and we just shake our heads and pick up and dispose in our trash cans at the house. We are kinda obsessed with it now as we viewed a duck two years ago with a plastic trash bag stuck around its head and had a hard time moving. Made me sad. I haven't spent a ton of time near the boat launches in Manteo so I can't say anything about it really. I do understand however how frustrating it can be. In other OBX beaches and elsewhere I have seen garbage receptacles full and overflowing. Maybe there are not enough staff to monitor and empty the cans. I don't know. Perhaps talk to some of your neighbors about attending a council meeting that may be meeting soon and bring up the subject. Maybe something can be done for garbage receptacles and fine signs to scare idiotic people.

What I am saying is this...you can look the other way and pretend the trash is not here, we all have a choice in this country. I challenge ANYONE who thinks we don't have a trash problem in Manteo and the OBX in general to take a trash bag and walk alone the road off 64 during the beach season, alone the pier next to the welcome center on 64, take a walk on the Oregon Inlet parking lot fishing Cat Walk,, walk the beach on Pea Island near Oregon Inlet, look around on the road to Wanchese, boat ramps perimeter in Manteo, should i go on?
You have no clue how hard is to pick up trash when it's in the water from a boat , a kayak or even waist deep. There should be a place to collect the trash that we all generate! In time it all ends up in the water when we don't and later it rolls down to the bay. Is that what we want here in Dare? People from every state in this country and others countries come here to enjoy the water then they go home but their trash stays with us. We need garbage cans! Anyone who thinks that "it all goes away" should join a group or just pick up a bag on your own and see how much is there during the month of June, July, Aug. and Sep., Trust me.. it's a lot of fun picking up someone else's trash specially when walking on fire ants, in the heat of the summer and getting bit by biting flys. Confused

Ok, I think I see our sticking point. You are of the mind that given a choice between a trash can and throwing trash out the window, people will make the better choice. I believe people who are too lazy to take their trash with them in the first place, and are willing to throw trash on the ground, will probably do it no matter the proximity of a receptacle (see any fast food parking lot.)

Here’s what I envision when you shift the responsibility from the person to the municipality:

They'd definitely need many cans, big cans, and emptied often. Something like the trash receptacle at the Salvo Day Use area by the showers would probably be good. I also see folks throw broken boogie boards, fishing rods, and beach chairs in the cans at public beach accesses effectively filling them in one go until they are next emptied. Mind boggling. If the cans aren't routinely serviced I think your picture is 100% accurate.

On a related note, the rollout cans generate a ton of trash. Loose trash should never be thrown into them especially in this windy environment. Also why do folks appear to rollout the cans once during their stay at the end? It's crazy to see a house with 3 or more cans and every one is completely overfilled. There's probably not enough messaging in houses to indicate the pickup days or else people just forget. At least in Nags Head on the blue route they finally settled in on the same schedule for the whole year. In prior years the days would change depending on the season.

Many state parks have a "pack in, pack out" policy. IOW, there are no trash receptacles so you take your trash with you when you leave. However, some have a trash bag dispenser with small bags mounted below the sign explaining the policy, as a convenience to the first time visitors who didn't bring their own. Might work for Manteo too.

I just went over to Jennette's pier yesterday morning and found just about every single trash container full with many of them with trash all around them. It was windy yesterday and you should have seen all the trash alone the bushes on the south side and on the parking lot. IT is NUTS!
I had someone tell me last year that "it all goes away", it does not! Nags Head and the town of Manteo from time to time calls out for a beach or town cleanup but then drag their feet when it comes to placing trash containers where are needed. I can help you but you need to help yourself. In Manteo the south side of the board walk does not have one single trash container , in time, all this trash ends up in the bay. You would think the person in charge of the boat house there would come out every other day and pick it up? NO WAY! Do they get pay for just been there? For four month a year the trash gets in the water then late in the season when most of it is gone to deeper places the town has a Clean up" People...We can do better than this!!

You "get" it", prob is many don't, but with a little education it should/could work. I am amazed at the crazy "backwards Jenga" game I see folks play w a trash can (usually when the wind is non existent; but forecast to pick up in a few hours). Kinda like all the empty red solo cups sitting (albeit temporarily) on a rental porch railing.

I believe you just bolstered my point. More of this is not the answer. Forcing people to be personally accountable for themselves and the trash they generate is the answer.

If you brought it with you, take it with you. It's just that simple.

We need garbage cans where people go the most AND those trash cans need to be serviced specially during the months that we get the most people here in the OBX. The problem is simple...you have a site with no cans and people start dumping it, the animals spread the trash at night and soon all the garbage is in the water, not to mention the fact that as soon as these sites get "trashed" people start bringing their home trash to it and their fish scraps and their deer parts in the fall and commercials their fish and shrimp heads because they have been doing just that for years. Their saying "it all goes away". Trust me, it all takes place right here in our town not by tourist but by local people. We can do better! It's our town, our Sound, it's where we live and we can sure do better!
