Shrimp

The post about shrimp on the main board got me thinking...

I've seen boats dragging nets for shrimp on the Roanoke Sound between Pirate's Cove and Manteo before on many occasions while on the skiff. I no longer have the skiff, but I have the kayak and a lot of bait binder. I've seen videos of folks tossing out bait binder by PVC poles used to mark the location and then tossing a cast net at the poles after some time. It's not as productive as dragging, but it got the job done.

Does anyone know if shrimp come up in the channel there at the Little Bridge? I'd have to do this using a kayak so I was thinking I could jump out of the yak on that shoal behind Fishing Unlimited, toss out some bait binder into the channel, and toss my net at it. I might give it a shot in a few weeks and see what comes of it. Another thought was going to the launch across from Pirate's Cove and tossing bait binder off the end of the dock and trying there. I don't recall how deep that is and hopefully there are no underwater obstructions once I clear the end of the ramp.

Here's a video of the technique, for reference. I would be quite limited in what depths I could do this at because I'd probably have to be out of the yak to throw my bigger net. Click to follow link...

I was toying with the idea of doing this exact thing when I go down in a few weeks. Not sure the best time of day/night, whether light might help (at night) and what the bottom looks like at some of those spots. I'd want to make sure I can get my cast net back without snags.

I have found shrimp in that cannel that is under the big bridge across from Pirates cove , I never got a lot but it was enough for bait and lunch too.

Never use Bait binder but I have used corn meal , it works for fish not sure about shrimp.

Great, thanks! I wouldn't be looking to fill the freezer, but if I can get a pound or two without a ton of effort it would be kind of entertaining as well.

Can you share whether you had to go at night or they were something you could find any time of day? I'd just be looking for some to use as bait.

My plans to try shrimping with bait binder have been scrubbed thanks to two nieces (or their parents) who refuse to close doors and a curious racoon who stole my dry chum from the outside owner's closet. Sad smiley
